With all this recent talk of Lunar Lander restorations, Thruster repros, Cpo Repros, and now with the Multi in the works I thought Id share a little something.
PROTOTYPE LUNAR LANDER CPOS

First some interresting notes:
These are from Scotts orginial Atari films and pre-date the reg LL release a year before
the proto films are all dated around Oct 1978
the CPO is interresting as it uses the same Pantone PMS pallete as the Asteroids Cabaret.
and its labeled to be printed in reverse on your typical cpo/polycarbonate NOT to be used
as screening surface panels like Asteroids and LL later did.

Also this art and most of lunar lander art was almost all HANDCUT in rubylith and only the text and a few small symbols were printed out and taped into place.

I took the 4 films scanned and vectored them to get a better idea how they were
supose to look.

Very interesting. So from the CPO, was the Abort function implemented differently? Rather than a super boost and lots of fuel used, it just drops the gravity to zero and no friction?

What does the text say?

Press for Command ?????
(Zero gravity, no friction)

I was thinking the "Press for Command Mission" button was the Abort button, just labeled differently. Looks like I was wrong.
 
I would guess that the early prototype of LL only had 2 missions...?

The normal - possibly Training mission - you would receive by default. Then by pressing the Command Mission button you would get a different, more difficult - mission. Similar to a game of the same era like Super Bug. You could play the normal course as the default game, but if you wanted it harder, you could press the button on the control panel to get the Advanced course - and yes it was harder.

Very nice and thanks for sharing. It's a great piece of history that shows some of the early thoughts about the game and how it changed during development.
