I'm sure someone will convince me this is stupid, then again maybe not. I love Atari's cabinet designs for their coin ops, but the upright Star Wars just never grew on me. Ever. Hated it back then, hate it now. Loved the game.

Ironically, the cabinet design that I'm most in love with is the one they used for Major Havoc/Firefox/I,Robot/Return of the Jedi/Paperboy (prototype only).

So I've been mocking up the idea of buying a ROTJ cabinet, gutting the monitor/board and putting in a Star Wars boardset, vector monitor, and even going so far as to hook up the head phone jack in front as well. Beyond that, I'd actually create brand new artwork and fit it to the cabinet, marquee included.

I like the Firefox cabinet a bit more, but don't have the heart to gut that machine (a favorite of mine).

Am I mad?

Paperboy would be next...(replicate the prototype)

middle pic is best. I would be cool, but killing a rotj would not. I would say build from scratch.

Major havoc, firefox and I robot don't have the same upper cab designs as ROTJ/proto paperboy. So you would lose the lower graphics.

If you don't like the upright Star Wars, just save up for a cockpit. :)

Gutting a Jedi cab is not cool IMHO.

You are mad, but no more than most of us here. The amount of time, work, and money involved would be pretty serious. (I recently parted in a MAMED Star Wars, and that alone was a huge undertaking!) You would have to customize the harness. I am not sure if a WG6100 would fit in there--maybe. An Amplifone would be a weird fit in there, as a Jedi cab has a monitor 'compartment' so to speak, and the Amplifone has separate boards.

Your mock ups do look cool though! I just think the whole idea is cooler as a 'what if'.

Another cool 'what if' would be a Star Wars cabaret...

I guess I am the opposite. I don't like cabaret style cabinets and that's what the ROTJ and dedicated Major Havoc cabinets are to me. When it comes to MH, I prefer the Space Duel cabinet as the ship on the side art is similar to the ship in MH. I never cared for ROTJ but I am not sure I condone messing with a dedicated cabinet.

It looks pretty good, and I personally believe that Firefox was the true sequel to Star Wars since it was done by be same team and ROTJ was nothing like it. So it kind of fits. But it might look better in a Firefox cab. I like the finned speaker grills a little better than the solid. Although the blue is a nice touch.

yeah I think it's a killer idea (especially if you just build your own cab)

I'm not hell bent on gutting a ROTJ, just think it or a Firefox cab would do the most justice. And yeah building from scratch was one of the original plans about two years ago. I would still like to do it, and was planning based ona local company who had some empty cabinets built.

Guess who was going to do it for me and really liked the idea: RAM Controls

Starting over again

wouldnt be any different then any other conversion and SWs were converted to jedis
nothing about it seems permenant so it could easlily be converted back.
more so then the other way around.
Not to mention if a vector Jedi mod ever surfaces youd be good to go :D

I don't see how any of those mock up ROTJ's look better than the original cabinet. I have always thought that Star Wars and Tron were the top 2 best looking cabinets.

I'm the complete opposite..I LOVE the SW upright design...every curve of it. I think the ROTJ design is butt fugly (to each their own of course).

On that note...I'll take the SW cab you strip out :-D

I Have a Absolutely great idea...since He hates the SW cabinet and likes the ROTJ cabinet...why don't all of you folks agree to this...let him sell the SW cabinet to someone who wants one..and either someone sell him a ROTJ cabinet or Help Him Build one from scratch or locate one and then everyone will be happy about all of it :D and then you'll get to see 2 good machines restored !

my 2 cents.

Moving forward, my first plan of attack would be to source the Star Wars components separately. I don't have it in me to gut a Star Wars upright. Even a ROTJ would be hard for me to gut (but less than a SW). Would look for a ROTJ in bad shape or even have one made.
