I'm pissed. I just called Ebay and bitched them out too -- I stated plenty of reasons for them to punish the seller, and explained to them how they are getting used. I feel a little better, but not quite all better.

How many of you unscrupulous, low-down, dirty scumbags have cancelled one of your auctions on Ebay (WITH A BID ON IT) to sell it to someone here on KLOV or some other site?

Just wondering... and bitching...

Just a tip, list your Ebay stuff with Buy it Now - at least I could have bought it that way.

This is the fourth time in less than a year that this crap has happened to me. Ever happened to you?

Yup. It's happened to me, and the seller actually blamed ME for finding one in better shape and cancelling my bid, which are total lies!

I actually won an auction, paid for the item, and then the seller said he sold it outside of ebay. He refunded the money, but I wanted the item. Hard to find this particular part.

I did it a couple weeks ago with a red baron CP, I started the auction with a buy it now but when someone bid on it the BIN went away. Someone here made me a great offer so i cancelled the auction and all bids associated with it, call me scum i guess but thats how it goes if you want something you have to aggresively pursue it and not sit idlely by. Its also happened to me countless times BTW.

That's why you need to do a "fixed price" listing. Then, the only option is buy it now. Auctions with a buy it now usually start low, then get a low bid which cancels the Buy it Now option.

You don't have these problems with Fixed Price listing. But, I get it, those aren't free to list like auction listings are now.

I can guarantee that the seller in my case lost money by doing what he did, and I was going to bid on some more of his items, but now I won't.

Being the high bidder on an auction is aggressively pursuing it, right?

once there is a bid on your auction it becomes a legal contract. i dont know if "scum" is the word for what you call a man who backs out of a legal contract for a few dollars, maybe contract breaker or liar?

heres how to stop the bullshit

another nice thing is about listing things with a fixed price is you, the seller have the option to make it "Immediate Payment Required," where they can't buy it unless you get paid right then, save ya a lot of BS from fake bidders, listing stays active until PAID IN FULL

If you were opted into the eBay shopping cart then you have to pay IMMEDIATELY regardless of what the seller wants. Both my account now have that BS on it. Its a good idea for small low priced items. It is not a good idea for big ticket items like (cars, pinball machines) because 9 outta 10 your going to want to look at the item before handing over the cash. Now you cant do it.

I wouldnt go so far as calling me a "liar", Ask anyone here ive sold to. If someone on ebay has something i want i will "agressively pursue" it i.e. message them with an offer to see if i can get it and not leave it up to someone snipeing it at the last second. If the item sell's in an auction im having of course the high bidder gets it but as far as a contract while its just an active auction,Why does ebay allow you to end it early?

Yeah its BS but happens all the time now. If a seller can sell you something for 100 on ebay but finds another buyer for 95 dollars off ebay its going to be more money in his pocket selling off ebay.

Ebay loses out and so do the buyers. If they hadnt increased their FVF this would happen less but its not the case.

there are valid reasons to end an auction early. these include a lost item, accidentally broken item, or making a mistake while listing.

i was just looking for words to describe someone who knowingly breaks a contract over a couple bucks. "scum" is awfully harsh. not so sure about "liar" though. i mean, if you offer an item for sale at auction and accept bids on it, and then without warning cancel the whole thing? arent you a liar for implying it was available for sale through auction in the first place???

personally i would never end an auction early, i sell rare and vintage instruments and musical equipment on ebay frequently and when people contact me and make me offers to end the auction early i always do two things. i send them an email telling them i wont do that as it is against ebay policy. i also post their email publicly on the listing itself so the other people who bid are aware. maybe my integrity is the reason i have been buying and selling regularly on ebay for 8 years and have 100% feedback.

its dishonest to end an auction early just to make a couple bucks, especially if there are already bids on it.

This is why if I have an item to sell, I'll list it locally for a couple weeks first, If no bites, they I'll ebay it, and if someone local wants it, I'll direct them to ebay, and they can buy it there, still pick up local and all to save the shipping.

I've had things I've won on ebay only to have the seller say "oh I guess we're out of stock on that" then leave ME negative feedback!

Guess I just feel that if you list it on ebay, or another auction site and someone bids/wins it, they should get it.

so it dosnt just happen herein the uk,a star wars upright came up yesterday and someone posted the link at j+,we all wandered how long it would go till it got pulled, sure enough a j+ member bought it and the auction ended.

nice to know its not just here in uk this s**t happens.
:)

Another thing I've been bitten by before is a seller that simply doesn't like the final price of an auction (or something), so refunds your money at the end with some BS excuse. Example, I once won a terminal keyboard on eBay, conventional auction (I was the only bidder), and paid immediately. Next day, I get a PayPal refund saying something to the effect of "Oh, I tested it last night, and it didn't work, so I'm refunding your money". I simply send the money back, pointing out that I don't care if it doesn't work, I still need it. And, he refunds the money again with some other BS excuse why he won't ship me the item I won and paid for. I went back and forth with him and eventually gave up, I mean, it was only a $20 item and I didn't lose any money, but dammit, I wanted it. Also, no amount of bitching was going to actually get him to ship me my item if he didn't want to, so my efforts to complain weren't really going to help anything.

And yes, two or three years later, I still haven't found another keyboard. Grumble...

So, yes, it's incredibly dishonest to list something for auction, then back out of the deal. It's a scummy thing to do all around. I mean, it's one thing if there aren't any bids on it. But if someone bids/buys the item, a contract has been started, and both parties need to stick to their agreement unless they BOTH agree not to continue.

For every eBay buyer horror story, there is a seller horror story and vice-versa. There is no doubt eBay has it's flaws and by now they are all well documented. You have to take the "good' with the various degrees of the "bad"...at least you have access to a global marketplace which makes this or any hobby possible with a reach beyond your local community.

While it stings to lose out on something because the seller took the transaction off-line at least you have not incurred a financial loss. Every day, people mail empty packages claiming they contain high-end items....and buyers claim items they actually received as lost, stolen or damaged to defraud honest sellers.

If you are not willing to accept the possibility that a seller might end an auction early, then perhaps eBay is not for you. At one time, I was frustrated by the same things....but they are beyond your control....I finally learned to accept it as part of buying on eBay.

That sucks. I had a situation once where I bid on an item that normally would have gone for $50 or so, but for whatever reason, no one else bid on it. I ended up winning the item for only $15. I paid immediately as I always do, but I got a message shortly after refunding my money -- the seller said that the item was being stored outside during the auction (??!) and was stolen. We had an exchange of messages back and forth about it, and judging by the seller's reaction, it was pretty clear that he just wasn't happy with the final price. Unfortunately, there was no real action that could be taken because eBay couldn't prove that it wasn't stolen. Meh. When it comes to eBay (or craigslist), some days you eat the bear and other days the bear eats you. I guess that's just part of the environment, unfortunately.

eBay, and the internet in general, breeds this type of activity. In a local market, sellers who do this type of thing end up losing business because they get a reputation for being flakey. Can you leave negative feedback for it? You should be able to.

I have done it with arcade machines before but I state in the Ebay listing that the game is for sale locally (craigslist, I also say how much) and that the auction can end at anytime due to that.
Doing it that way gives the bidder a chance to also buy it from Craigslist. The problem with listing a BIN is that it is gone once a bid is placed :)

For every eBay buyer horror story, there is a seller horror story and vice-versa.

Absolutely, I had a DVD sale once, only like $10 bucks, But the seller wanted a refund because I shipped a Broken disc to her. She didn't want to send the broken pieces back, I had packed it in bubble wrap inside a nice USPS box, and had taken photos of it prior to shipping to show it wasn't broken/scratched. She just wanted to keep the disc and get her money back.
