Lots about Mr. Do!

WOW! It is Mr. Do! Qix and Crystal Castles in one game! Awesome!

Yep! Got this one on Arcade Legends as well, and again...would love a dedicated. It's amazingly fun with a ton of strategy. i.e. let the ball bounce against the walls a few times before it hits an enemy and you'll get a lot more points.

Taito is really good with the hidden depth (strategy) in their games. Have you played Space Invaders Extreme yet? Damn great game. Also the Space Invaders Infinity Gene is awesome, I love how the game evolves are you play it!

funny discussion

It pains me to hear "tay-toe" instead of "tie-toe" myself....
I had to ask my Japanese developer and he said the true japanese way of pronouncing it is

"tie-TOE"

Even though I know quite a bit of Japanese, I still have to stop myself from saying Tae-toe. That is how I said it when I was a kid.

The Crystals were Phil Spector's slaves. A lot of hard work, and not much payoff.

Darlene Love actually sang lead on He's A Rebel, one of their biggest hits. And she wasn't with the band; she was a session singer who sang background on songs like The Monster Mash.

Later on, she'd have a massive Christmas hit with Chirstmas (Baby Please Come Home). And then she'd fade into obscurity until starring as Danny Glover's wife in the Lethal Weapon films. She's now featured on Late Night with David Letterman almost every holiday season.

Oops - back on topic. Do Run Run! is a fun game. :D

Yes crazy right?

Look at this flyer, Mr. Do, looks very different, like a white ghost, with a ball on his back. It is even in the game graphics, I wonder if anyone has this version!

Yes, there are some boards floating around with that old Mr. Do! version, I had one that I sold on ebay a few years ago. Mr. Do! wears a white "suit" and carries a green rake. When he gets killed, his head blows up to about 5 times its original size and pops. Maybe the game's similarity with Dig Dug prompted the change. That version is included in MAME and listed as "prototype", although the board I had didn't seem to have a low serial number and had soldered ROMs.

I still have a board where the old white Mr. Do! character appears during the cut scene. The playable charcter is the standard clown version.

It's pronounced 'dough'?

Not really. It has been pronounced "dew" by everyone since the game game out, with no indication that it was ever incorrect. Even TV commercials for the home versions called it "dew".

Yes, I love both of those. Have you played Space Invaders Extreme 2 on Nintendo DS? It uses both top and bottom screens and is an even better game than the first.

Great stuff! I just wish I knew about the musical notes part back in the day.

BTW has anyone ever found a diamond in the game? I have not.

The diamond won't appear until all the apples have dropped.

Don't forget about the roses!

Yeah, I'm part of the Mr. Dew camp as well....

Never really thought about Mr. Do's gameplay reminded me of anything Taito did. In fact, if you look at the rest of Universal's library of games - there's tons of similarities....

As far as the trilogy goes.... I still think Mr Do's Wild Ride is my favorite followed by Do Run Run.

I admit, bitd, every single Mr. Do I came across was in the Universal cab; I'se seen a butt-load of Mr Do's out there. It's too bad the subsequent sequels didn't come in Universal cabs as well. I remember Defender being the cab of choice for conversions...

Has anybody seen a Mr Do's Wild Ride or a Do Run Run or Magic Castle in a Universal cab or had it converted into one?

What prevents it from being scanned and printed?

The dedicated CP is actually two (rhymes with Do!) pieces of rounded plastic/plexi that is screenprinted on the back with the graphics (much like a marquee). Those two pieces are then adhered to the metal CP. Here's a good pic that shows what the original looks like:

So far I don't know of anyone who has ever reproed the CP pieces. If so, I have a bare metal CP that is waiting for them :)

Mr Do! was my favorite game of all time on Colecovision. I played that for hours and hours. I had a CT that I got rid of and I regret that as much as letting go of my Red Baron. The CT was nice because it had a full size monitor, but I could only keep one CT and I chose Tempest. One of these days I will get another Mr Do! hopefully an upright. I know someone that has a mint one and I asked him to consider me if he ever parts with it. Great game though and I do miss playing it.

Wow, that's beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen that CP.

My experience with Mr. Do! in the wild is completely opposite. I frequented many arcade back in the 80's, and never once saw a Mr. Do! in a Universal cabinet. Every single one was a conversion. And I played a lot of Mr. Do!s.

In fact, I didn't know what a dedicated cabinet looked like until I started collecting game flyers in the 90's.
