I used to play this all the time as a young lad at the Carl's Drug Store (skip to 30 seconds) and at the time I thought it was pronounced Mr Dew, not Mr Dough. I did't know all the rules, like get the cherries all with out stopping to make the notes do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do and get a bonus, hence why he is called Mr Do.

I can't remember what the cabinet looked like back then, but I don't think it was a conversion, it seemed very official, Not sure if it was a Taito or a Universal cabinet, and Nerdygrrl just told me about Tehkan cabinets, but I haven seen a photo of one yet, apparently they were more common in NYS.

Speaking about Taito, even though this game is credited to Universal, it is co obvious that the game was made by Taito, spelling extra, the credit icon looking like a littl guy trapped in a bubble. The music, all of them are so similar to Bubble Bobble. The designer was Kazutoshi Ueda who also designed Lady Bug, and Bomb Jack by Tehkan (Temco) which just adds to the confusion to Mr. Do's origin and where it was developed.

Whatever the origin of the game, it is a great game, with way more to it than Dig Dug, which many people compare it to. You can take many strategies to playing it, for example any of these will complete a level: get all the cherries, kill all the enemies and spell extra.

Also the game is very hard, even on the easiest setting a game doesn't last more than 8 rounds for me. On the Colecovision the enemies move at the same speed as you, where in the arcade version they move much faster, and at times move double speed. I did notice that if they are chasing you they will pause as to not catch you as long as you don't turn.

I am thinking that this might be my next game, although I am not sure which cabinet I want.

What do you guys think??

To me there are few things prettier than a Mr. Do! in a dedicated Universal cabinet. However, find one in complete condition to buy. I have a dedicated one but without the hard-as-hell to find control panel it's just sitting in my storage waiting for that day where either the CP falls in my lap or someone does a repro run of the plexi CP pieces.

What prevents it from being scanned and printed?

It's pronounced 'dough'?

Yes crazy right?

Look at this flyer, Mr. Do, looks very different, like a white ghost, with a ball on his back. It is even in the game graphics, I wonder if anyone has this version!

Also the game was also distributed by Eastern Micro Electronics, I wonder if that was the conversion kit, or they had their own cabinet.

I think if I got it I would like either the Taito upright, or the Taito cocktail. I love the Taito cocktail I have with Big Kong in it.

Edit:
Also look at the gigantic monitor in that cocktail! And Mr. Do, isn't a clown in that version also!

Make Trax/Crush Roller is crazy hard!

I wonder why Mr. Do! was never released for the NES?

But it WAS released for the Super NES...a very good conversion, with a separate battle mode pitting two Mr. Do!s against each other on the same screen. I like playing that one on the SNES every once in a while.

I have it on my Arcade Legends machine, but I'd love to get a dedicated. My wife is crazy good at the game. Me...not so good. I'm way better at Dig Dug.

EDIT: And I can buy into the whole "do re mi fa so la ti do" theory, but to me, it will always be pronounced "Mister Dew." If it was "Dough," it would've been shown as Mr. DOH! like Arkanoid: Revenge of DOH. :D

I agree on the arcade game being a lot harder than Colecovision, I grew up on Celeco and when Jeff F got a Do (it's very nice with all the cool artwork) I was pretty excited to play it and I sucked bad. I actually want to play it more next time I have the chance.

I still think it's 'dew' though. I remember commercials and stuff. The whole doe, re, mi thing makes sense but.. everything's always called it 'dew' since it was new.

I can't remeber what version I used to play when my kids were little and entertaining still, but they always used to say he had a yellow snowball and thought that was pretty funny.

I was playing the SNES version just the other day. It is pretty good. Those Arcade Legends cabinets have such horrible emulation, I don't know how you stand it! Rastan is so bad on it, the music runs at 2/3 speed.

Yes, the Coleco version is so much easier, but still fun! And I still call it Mr. Dew, no matter what it is supposed to be.

The funny thing is that in Japan (where the game was developed), if they (Japanese person) were to read the word "Do" written in Romanji they would say Dough.

He will always be Mr. "Dew" in my book :)
Definitely high on my "want" list.

Thanks for all the neat factoids. Not sure how I ever missed this release for the SNES. Kicking myself now.

One other thing: The British version is Mr Go!, which rhymes with "doe" rather than "do".

Great game, IMO. And I have just been educated, because for nearly 30 years, I have always called the game 'Mr. Dew', did not even realize it is pronounced 'Mr. Dough'. Even though I recognized getting all the cherries in a group make the sounds 'do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do'.

Now I have to think about how many other games that I have been mispronouncing all these years.

And yes, the game can be very difficult. Apples are your friend. On later scenes you have to get to the apples on the upper part of the scene. Then dig under the apple and push it slightly so the monsters cannot get by. After that, position Mr. Do over the apple and face down. Now when the monsters go psycho and start turning blue and digging, they will dig under the apple and you can squish several with one apple.

I also like the Yankee Do! modded version for a little change of pace. Uncle Sam digs faster and your powerball always comes back right away after shooting an enemy. Where in Mr. Do, sometimes your damn powerball takes a bit to return.

Yes, the ball takes longer each time you use it, so you have to be careful! I like to save the ball until I get the food and cause the extra monster to come out, cause those blue monsters can be tough, they eat very fast!, but nothing better than getting the extra letter, and all the blue monsters turn to apples and crush the other enemies and cause all kinds of points and end the level!

There have also been a lot of sequels, but my favorite one has to be Do! Run Run. I've gotten massively addicted to it before, even over Mr. Do!. It has a more 3D look to it, and has levels of platforms that affect game play. Way better music too.
