LOTR Depth Question

Hello All,

Recently I sold my WH2O and TFTC and have been looking to add an Addams. Yet as I have not found an Addams I was thinking of going after one of the two other pins I like: LOTR and POTC. I really like the sounds and music of Pirates, yet I am a little concerned with the depth and getting a little tired of it. However, there is also a really nice Lord of the Rings for sale locally that has a few additions such as some LEDs, extra figures (they tastefully added a few Army of the Dead figurines to the Path of the Dead), One Ring ball shooter, etc. Also, I like Tolkien's work (even the Silmarillion) and did not mind Jackson's adaptations of his material and am even looking forward to the Hobbit. I have played POTC and LOTR and enjoyed both, yet when looking at a $3500 purchase (both are the same cost this time and both are listed as HUO) I am trying to look to the long, long term.

I am therefore curious of the depth of LOTR. Even though I am not very good at pinball, I really am allured to a game that has a lot of depth and replayability. As such, LOTR reminds me a lot of why I went after a Twilight Zone. Specifically, in regards to TZ I liked it because I enjoyed both the T.V. series and movies and knew the game to be deep. Is this true with LOTR? Am I looking at it correctly by liking both the theme and potential long term playability? What about potential resale of LOTR? Is it possibly to get ~$3500 out later?

Thanks all for your thoughts and opinions!

Respectfully,

Sam

Lord of the Rings is one of the deepest pinball games ever made. It's truly a masterpiece in software design for pinball.

I don't like Pirates much. It gets pretty dull after a short amount of time, whereas Lord of the Rings will continually give you another goal to shoot for. The Ring modes are fantastic, and there are several mini wizard modes to work toward getting aside from the main wizard mode in the game.

I have a LOTR and Addams, but if I had to get rid of one, it would be the Addams simply because LOTR is so much deeper and varied. Both are great, however.

Thank Jar as I appreciate the thoughts! :) And, quite, I agree and am certainly leaning the LOTRs way. To be honest, I am not entirely sure I would even be wise buying a decent Addams for 3.5k since there are so many made (over 20,000) I perhaps should just exercise patience and wait for a nice deal if possible. Yet I really cannot recall the last time I saw a really nice LOTR come up, especially under 4k.

One day, if possible, I would like to add a nice POTC as I do enjoy it. I hope, then, that I can get better at LOTR as I would like to one day make it to Valinor (most likely not but worth trying for)!

Thanks for everything!

Sam

If I ever decide to drop >$3k on a pin, it'll be a LOTR.... I've yet to beat ROTK multiball, and have thus never seen Valinor.

I'd like to think that if I owed one, I'd get the ring and Balrog working reliably to make FOTR multiball and DTR a little easier :)

TTT is a joke :)

You will NEVER get bored of LOTR. There is so much there - every shot has multiple possibilities depending on the moment. POTC is good, but I was bored of it within 2 or 3 months and sold it. LOTR is forever.

Here's are some LOTR vids I made....I don't even scratch the surface on strategies, but these vids show you a good deal of gameplay, modes, multiballs w/ some captions explaining the rules.

Thanks! It is comforting to know that spending the 3.5k on the HUO LOTR is not a poor decision assuming one likes the theme as well as a pinball machine that has extremely deep rules!

As for the TTT multiball, at least something in the game is easy! :) This is one thing I like about LOTR: it is easy enough for a casual player to enjoy but hard enough to make seasoned players (not that I am one) appreciate it and continue to play it for quite some time! I must admit, that while I still would like to own a few other pins (Addams, POTC, and Williams IJ) depth is very important to me as I would like to try and avoid being bored with a major purchase in a short amount of time.

Always,

Sam

LOTR is a great game, and very deep. If you have to be able to beat a game, LOTR may be frustrating, I doubt I'll ever reach Valinor. Very challenging, plenty of modes. One thing I'm not crazy about is that a couple of the modes rely on the left ramp, right ramp combo, gets a bit repetitive (especially if you can't hit those consistantly!). You're rewarded for quick shots, works well with the layout, seems you can always keep the ball moving, don't need to stop or trap the ball much. The ball times are pretty long, I like that part as well.
POTC is a fun game, more of a 'just hit the ball' game. It would be perfect for happy hour or unwinding, I'd like to get one someday.
TAF is a classic, not as deep as LOTR but all around fun, I never get tired of it. It gets more play than the others overall, seems everyone has heard of the Addams Family. LOTR is in the top 3 for # of plays out of 7 games.
As far as holding value, I think a LOTR will hold it's value better than than the other 2 (especially a HOU), with TAF a close 2nd. Both of those will be top performers in the pin market, wherever that goes. My guess is that POTC will drop in value compared to most pins. It's more a 'B-list' game and as they age and more come off route you'll see more in the resell market, falling in price as the supply goes up.

TAF is about as deep as a puddle after a spring rain... I could never own one.

Hit electric chair... catch kickout on left flipper... shoot bear kick... hit electric chair again from right flipper *yawn*.

Once you have your first billion point game and tour the mansion 4-5 times on a credit (50M each time), you'll never want to play it again either.

It's one of those rare games that's easier to rape when you don't have multiball, so the 'hardest' shot of the game (the vault) doesn't need to ever be hit...
