OK... so I get a Sega Lost World for a great price... knowing that there were some gun issues and knowing the history of Sega guns...

Anyway... there are 12 LED IR Sensor clusters surrounding the monitor. They are wired sequentially with a plug, then 12 little PCB's with 2 LEDs on each (one for each gun I would guess but I am not 100% sure on this).

Anyway, I knew there were issues with at least 2 sensors...but the game came with two extras. Yesterday I identify not just 2 sensor clusters completely out, but one that has 1 LED out as well. I figure I will replace the 2 that are completely out.

Before the repair the sequential order of sensors looked like this:

PLUG - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - BAD - GOOD -GOOD - 1 LED OUT - BAD.

I replaced the two sense PCBs and now I am getting:

PLUG - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - GOOD - BAD - BAD - BAD - GOOD.

I've tried swapping the two sense PCBs I installed. I tried swapping wires... nothing. The two locations that were BAD are now GOOD... but the 3 locations BETWEEN them are now BAD? That includes the one unit that had only 1 LED showing and two units that had BOTH LED's showing. Now, I will say they did look a little dim prior to replacement of the two locations... still.

I am at a loss... I think I will try to swap a good PCB over to a one of the locations for the hell of it... if it blows too then at least I know there's something going on over there... I'm seriously converting to the HAPP system, but if I can confirm these just blew (perhaps the BAD location prior to these three was somehow preventing them from up and dying?)... and replacing them won't blow them again... maybe I'll keep it stock.

Opinions? Anyone know where I can get 3 (or 4) Sega gun sense LED PCBs for less than the $30-$50 being demanded on ebay?

Biggest issue with this system is loose wires in guns. When there are bad crimps at Sensor Bd in gun or broken wires at entrance to gun, it freaks out the tracking bd and tends to turn LEDs on solid which starts burning them. Oh and the LED Bds are tranmitters, not sensors. That being said, if you have all good LED Bds in string and power up with compromised hoses, you will burn LEDs pretty fast. Ok if you have one of the Gun Input Protection Bds I designed installed maybe not so. But most LW don't have these installed. I recommend you make sure hoses are 100% fine first. Then get tracking bd tested. If all good you can proceed with LEDs. Use the small filters on LED Bd studs to test. Disconnect string and test every pcb on first position. Both LEDs will be dim. Thats normal. All 12 should be same intensity unless you are mixing types of pcbs. There are three types we made for these type three games and they tend to run at varying brightnesses. But as for same pcbs they all should be same intensity. Any dimmer or brighter than the majority, replace. Once they are all tested like this, introduce a second, third etc until you have a complete good string.

I do believe it has the extra PCB attached to the gun PCB. The seller took a picture of it a few months back and I posted it here and you confirmed that it was the PCB in question.

Now, with the LEDs that are in it (the 3 missing)... I "CAN" get tracking and can even play games with both guns... but with a jumpy cursor, etc...

Is that indicative of working guns or could the guns be bad still? BTW... they do have the extra "hose attachment" that prevents them from being pulled at the cabinet.

Also, can a bad LED PCB cause another to go bad? Any good reason why the positions between the two prior BAD PCB's went bad once I replaced the two BAD PCBs?

Thanks!

With one missing LED Bd you have inconsistent jumpy tracking. With three I'm surprised you are getting any tracking.

Left gun tracks OK at left, very jumpy at right. Right gun tracks OK at right and very jumpy at left. Using both guns I can actually get through stage 1.

:)

I've seen a seemingly good LED Bd take out a good one after it. Nice variable to throw in there huh? So yes its possible you have one that light up fine that can take out ones after it. Move it to end of string.

The oddity is that the 3 directly after it died...but the 4th (and last in line)? That was the other board I replaced and IT lights up fine....

I'd think if that PCB took out the following 3... it would have taken out the 4th too. But yeah, I think I will take your advice and test them all at position 1 and go one at a time.

You might want to make sure your machine has this mod.
It's supposed to keep shorted boards from blowing out good
boards.

I acquired 6 sensors from a friend... untested. I checked each individually and the first 3 worked great. The game is now running 100%... I'm thrilled.

SEGAREPAIR (or anyone)...

...what are the chances of replacing the LED's on these sensor PCBs or are other components assuredly blown? I have 5 bad ones here and I'd really hate to throw them in the garbage if there is any chance they can be repaired. Possible? Worth anything? Trashcan worthy?

If you can source these LEDs let me know. I purchased 6 or so pairs (same manufacturer) just trying to guess at part. No luck, not even close. Yes you can mix and match what you have and probably get lucky.
As for future protection, the drawing earlier will do. That was my first mod when we started noticing issues with system. My next mod was the Gun Input Protection B. We installed them on HOD3 on up. Thats best mod to protect system from the guns.

Wouldn't it be more or less being able to measure the
wavelength the LEDs are producing ?

I of course have absolutely no idea how this would be
accomplished :(

nm is at upper end (visible). I bought six pairs around visible color but no luck. I had no clue of any other specs so I just bought everything in the nm range Digikey had at the time. It was many years ago. Not sure what is even available now. My guess so far though is that they they are specially made for the company that made the tracking system (Ohmic). It was not Sega.

I also experimented with several LEDs and had no luck. We used to have a
LOT of Type II gun games. Most of them are in a landfill now. It was too
expensive to keep them running considering what little money they were
bringing in.

Its too bad someone can't hack Wii and set it use it. I know it will work. I just don't have the time to get into it. The Game Bd or I/O bd depending on system just takes regular analog inputs for the Xs and Ys. Rest is just digital so super simple to do with no special circuitry involved. For example, you could take the turrets off an Ocean Hunter or Gun Blade or LA Machine gun and put them on any of these type two games. Just need a gun out button for reload and you're good to go. I can play all type 2 games with a full type 2 setup and then easily shut down that system and use my pot / switch box to play same game.

Anyways I'm sure that Wii can be hacked to accomplish this. Then just use controller in guns and the IR emitter bar at screen as normal.
