Lost the thrill.

spanks im about there i have finally gotten my collection to where i want it and i am now bored. i havent played a game since cax. i may start to sell off some of my personal games but i am not quite there yet. maybe in a few months i have other hobbies that could use some love for sure. there will always be games out there you found them once so if you want them again its not like you cant find them.

If you decide to sell your collection let me know. I'm sure there are a few I might want to give a good home to.

Waaah.. I lost the thrill..

In every hobby there are serious people and people that come and go.
Ive been into this hobby for about 10 years. Do I play the games every day? no. But I enjoy them whenever friends come over. And since these games have a deeper meaning to me, I feel great just having them.

Id like to say BYE to everyone who's lost the thrill :) Nice knowing you....

Jon

Well said. For me its more of a passion than a thrill anyway. The satisfaction comes from owning them, repairing them, restoring them, encouraging others to do the same, seeing other people enjoy them. Yesterday I sold a game that I had repaired and done some minor restoration work on. I played a couple games on it right before the new owner came by and picked it up. Seeing the guy drive off and knowing that game was going in someones home and getting a second chance was a great feeling, one i never ever get tired of.

Spanks does these look at me posts every so often, ignore it and move on.

If people would actually read the post and could actually understand the post you would clearly see this is not a "pity" post. I was asking others if they had the same problem and was trying to find a better way to solve it. This wasn't intended to be a good bye post or anything that several people tried to make it out to be. Yes I have gotten to the point where I maybe come here once every couple days and read maybe a handful of threads if that many.

I think my collection grew way too large way too fast. I also never said that I was selling everything, but I have sold a bunch of games that didn't hold a significant bond with me. I will be down to around 6-7 games total and I think it will help free up some clutter and give me a better outlook on what I want to do. I still love games, but I just never seem to play them unless I am somewhere that has one.

Spanks,
I think the reason I (and others) got the impression you were on your way out was due to what you had stated in the first post.

I will get down to my few grails and probably call it quits. I figure sooner or later those will probably go also and all that will be left is a memory of when I was happy with this crap.

To me that pretty clearly says "im just about done". Sorry if I misinterpreted it.

How can letting all of his games go and calling it quits possibly mean that he is quitting the hobby???:p

I didn't say I was getting rid of "everything". I said I was getting rid of all the games that weren't "grails" And calling it quits on buying.

As for the room: I love it. My house is actually becoming a home instead of a cluttered place of junk which I really enjoy. The money was never really any issue, but it is nice to know that I won't be spending a fortune to fix games anymore.

I think for me it was reliving my child hood days. Well with the good memories always comes the bad , but trying to relive a childhood that wasn't that great to begin with all over again isn't that bright.

This is something I can relate to.
Like you say with the good came the bad, same thing here, never knew that playing the games 4 real again and then thinking back could bring so much back.

Not saying this applies to Spanks, but I have noticed that the guys who "Burn Out" are trying to cram too much into too little.

Either they don't really have the money, or they don't have the space, or they don't have the time it takes to be in a particular hobby at the level they are trying to be in at.

Keep your hobby at a level you can manage and even if you lose interest for a while, you don't have to liquidate to get your life back.

There are days I wonder how life would be simpler if I quit and sold off my manymachines. Less space needs, nothing to fix (I have no idea how that would feel), no $ sunk in, etc. Every once in a while I walk in someone's house...and they collect nothing, and they hoard nothing. The simplicity of it all massively appeals. No time demands, no security issues, clean visual look, etc.

It is usually when I'm feeling overworked and I've spent too much time on the machines or some hassle came up that selling and simplifying appeals.

When I was younger I collected coins. I quit and restarted a few times. One $100 reference book in particular I bought, sold, bought again, sold again, and bought again. I still have this book to this day even though I haven't collected the coins for over a decade--just in case. [Obviously now I collect machines to put coins into instead. Your friends come over, look at coins, and are done in 5 minutes. At least with the coin machines, they enjoy them for a few minutes more, and not just to be polite.]

I'm more patient now. In days I think of selling my collection, I simply walk away and ignore them. A day or week or two or three later I'm back to normal and hunting again.

So I guess my only advice is that if you (anyone) is thinking of selling machines in a more drastic way than pruning, then make the decision, sleep on it, maybe let a few weeks pass, and then do it if you feel the same way. Sometimes the thrill comes back, sometimes it doesn't.

One of your posts mentioned you might eventually sell them all eventually. Then you stated you would likely keep some. I see that discrepancy as normal for someone who is thinking of downsizing.

From what I read above, this isn't the first time you've posted thoughts of selling. I don't know if you sold before. As I've suggested above, it's normal to have (more than once) thoughts of selling the bulk or all of a collection.

If you are selling as many machines now as it seems, it might really be worth taking a breather for a few weeks on your favorites left.

It sounds like your course of action has already been decided (sell 2/3, keep 1/3), at least for the moment, so this post really is about sharing my thoughts to everyone, as it is clear you are not the only one at this place in their collecting.
