Looks like Capcom still hasn't quite given up on arcades...

In the "yeah we kind of knew this was going to happen" segment of the news, looks like Super SF IV is getting an arcade release. From the sounds they're unfu^H^H^H^Hfixing the online for the console release, I might actually pick this one up for a console, but I'm sure getting the board from .jp would be obscenely expensive. It'd be cool to play in an arcade but there's near zero of them around me and the chances of anyone outside of NYC or CA importing one of these for the kind of price it's likely going to run (weren't the SFIV cab/boards going for north of 5 grand to import when they were released?) is near zero. Anyone enough of a SF fan that you're going to try to put hands on one for the home?

*e* and to make the joke now, I'm holding off for the release of Super Turbo SF IV Hyper before I go after a board. It's like the 90s all over again w/ this one.

I kinda see this as a little pointless. Why would you go blow a bunch of cash playing it if you already have the console version? There better be lots of differences between the arcade and the console version to draw lots of interest.

Every new arcade game costs near or more than this, games like Golden Tee Live are more than that, and sitdown racers of any kind are usually 6 and up, so the chances aren't THAT slim.

it's intended for the japanese players only basically. the arcade scene is still fairly healthy over there, especially when it comes to fighting games.

hopefully this can bring some kind of back too arcades that other companys might jump back in!

I am so tired of the SF series, why won't they just stop? It got old for me after SSF.
That's too bad. SF3 was a great game as is Street Fighter 4. I hope they reintroduce the parry to one of these upcoming versions.

There is a local arcade that had SF4 before it was released for the console. At $1.50 per play people were lined up for it. It's a pretty cool experience beating a few people knowing that the last 3 matches you won cost the other guy $4.50. :D

I think it's different playing someone in person than it is on the console over the internet. There are a couple of arcades here in SoCal that hold regular tournaments, and they seem to be pretty popular. SFIII: 3rd strike seemed to bring a small segment of the arcade going crowd back, and they've not left. Look up EVO 2010. It's a national level fighting game tournament in Vegas and I think it's been doing well. Youtube is filled with SFIV tutorials and match videos.

I'm kind of happy the arcade exists and thrives in some form still today, albeit in much smaller numbers. I know we're mostly classics people here, but these could be our contemporaries. In 20-30 years they could be bitching about how some guy on CL wants 1k for a Taito Viewlix with SFIV or Blaze Blue or whatever when they go at the auction for less than $300 all day long (beat to s**t, though).

Really weird to think they might be looking for card readers instead of change machines, though.

I totally agree. There is nothing like beating your opponent in person instead of online. The look on their face and the crowd that used to watch. I once had 56 wins in a row on a Mortal Kombat 2 in an arcade. It would not have been the same online.

At www.arcadeufo.com in Austin they have six linked SF4 cabinets. $0.50 per play. Was $1.00 previously.
They had the SF4 machines long before the console version was released.

When I lived in NJ, I spent 3 1/2 hrs in an arcade ofn50c (1 play) in the original soul calibur. This was way back before I had gotten my dreamcast to practice it on. It was loads of fun. And number 1 problem w/ all online fighting games : LAG!! Even on newer connections w/ the 15mb lines, you still see lag and when a game is that fast paced, it hurts. Alot.

Online simply cannot compete with the face to face gameplay. It's just easier is all. That said, I do miss those days of having a good streak going and drawing a crowd.

And now we have the announcement of MvC3:
http://kotaku.com/5518018/marvel-vs-capcom-3s-bombastic-trailer-reveals-16-characters

Anyone want to set the over/under of when the announcement is made this is headed to arcades as well?

And am I the only one who thinks that the ??? in the first image after the trailer looks a hell of a lot like Thanos doing his whole "here is my infinity gauntlet, fear me mortals" bit with his hand held up?
