looking to make my gauntlet original. Does anyone know what needs to be removed to make this a gauntlet 1 board? since this machine was converted to a gauntlet 2. I don't have the schematics and wonder maybe if anyone knew off hand.
Please and thank you. I guess i could buy one. take away from my milk money and the baby's crying!!

probably too much effort to convert it back. Just buy a new board. I think you will spend more in eproms and still have to come up with the security chips.

why not just turn that board into a dual boot gauntlet hack so you can switch back from gaunlet 1 or 2 with a flip of a switch. Thats what im gonna do to my G1 board plus you already have the g2 board so there's less roms to be changed. Do a search for daul boot gauntlet hack

OK, I went and looked at the checksums in the MAME database.

To convert from Gauntlet2 to Gauntlet you need to:

Remove 6 ROMs: 6A, 6B, 1C, 1P, 2C, and 2P. Alternatively, I think you can just leave these in - I don't believe their presence will mess up Gauntlet, but these are not used.

Replace 11 ROMs: 10A, 10B, 7A, 7B, 16R, 16S, 6P, 1A, 1L, 2A, 2L

Leave the 6 ROMs that are the same: 9A, 9B, 1B, 1MN, 2B, 2MN

When burning 10A, you need to use the patched version that bypasses the slapstic.

Remove the slapstic chip from 10C, and install jumpers between pins 4 and 10, and pins 5 and 9 of the slapstic socket. This can be done with a machine pin socket used as a jumper plug, or two small bits of wire on the back of the board.

I tried this and cannot get it to work. Steph made the ROM's but we now understand there are ROM errors even if it is done right.

If anyone out there has done this successfully with both games and both setup modes working... Please give me some advice.

As far as you converting your game to a G1, I would love to just swap ROM's with you so I can have a G2 and you can have the G1.... I'll PM you on this...

I the guy who did the dual boot hack lived/lives in the bay area. I think he was a member here, but may have moved on..

just a little warning, if you do try to deconvert, its not something you want to be doing more than once. gaunlet is a pretty fragile board. I think its multi layer. I had one break on me riding in my truck going 50 mi to deliver a game.

so your saying the dual boot was unsuccessful?

I wasn't successful, it has been done, but apparently does give ROM errors even if it works.
Someone may confirm that...

Overall, it wasn't a hard process, but something in my project just didn't work...
I still have a few tricks to try, but for now I am hunting G2 ROM's

The dual ROM problem:
My G2 game plays fine with the dual boot, but the setup fails with a ROM 38000 error.
Flipside, G1 won't play (same error), but the setup DOES work (mostly).... go figure...

I finally snagged a GII board off Ebay for $21.
It arrived well packed and in good physical condition.
Unfortunately it didn't work, but I transferred all the ROM's over and I finally have a working GII (for real!) .
I can at least pack up the G1 ROM's and keep them with the machine as it just isn't as fun of a game as GII.
Still nice to have both sets of ROM's.

BTW, if you do go back to G1, you may leave in the "extra" GII ROM's, they will not interfere with operation of G1.
