I'm looking for the three screen sit down driving game. If you have one or have a line on one send me a message. Pics and a detailed description of the condition would be great.
Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade the earlier red cab software to the newer yellow cab F355 Challenge 2 International Edition? It's got additional tracks.

Thanks,
Lance

Hey Matey

Someone with Taste I see :0)

What country are you in?

and answer to the question, yes you can get the F335 2 rom board and just plug it in to the original cab, it was also supposted to have been improved as per flyer

Problem is getting a rom board, If you can find the yellow machine get it, probably easier to get the original rom board

I've been drooling over one local, but it's way out off my price range for now. Let me know if you are close to Denver, and want info.

I saw the yellow one on ebay a couple of years back when I was trying to get mine

Guy couldn't sell it for $3500 in the USA, I said to him I would of had it straight away if it was in the UK and couldn't believe it hadn't sold

He couldn't believe no one was interested either

I know some of the games maybe better now on PC/Console, but I doubt they give you any more of a thrill of driving than this does

after 16 laps at long beach in a race, you really do feel like you've just got out of a car, it's darn hard work using clutch/gears all that time and having another Ferrari in the rearview constantly, you can't beat the machine for it's solid cabinet, real feel pedals and gear shifter, force feedback steering and thumping subwoofer behind the seat

Even the guy working on Forza commented on how good they were, and he owned one and beat his lap time after playing it on one circuit, wish I could find that interview again

those fanatec wheels and shifters move about and feel like a kids toy compared to this

I set mine in Grandprix mode for this race pleasure

It was the first driving game on any format (Dreamcast) that really made me want to pratice and practice and practice, learning Long Beach inside out so you had a chance of winning a race.

I then remembered seeing this huge machine with 3 screens in an arcade, whilst I was looking for some old classic arcade machines in Skegness the year before, so the next time I was over there, the only machine I looked for was F355 and there was a F355 2 so I was straight on it

Dreamed of owning one since and had to have one

Hey Bods1, I know exactly what you mean. Must feel pretty cool owning such an awesome bit of hardware. As far as feeling like the real deal, you're right there hasn't been anything like it since.
I've sent emails to several distributors and $6500 for a Red one was the cheapest. If I could find a yellow one for $3500 I'd be all over it. I was hoping there was a way to upgrade the original red ROM-board with the new program. I've found one of those for $5,000, still a bit pricey.
I've considered building my own driving sim using Forza-3 and three LCD screens but it also requires 3 xbox's and 3 copies of the game. By the time I bought the seat and Fanatec wheel and pedals I'm into it for about $5K almost the same cost as a DX cabinet.

I know there out there and I'm hoping to find one for $2.5K-$3K. Is that even possible? One distributor told me that he didn't recommend buying one because it breaks often and is expensive to fix. Sounds just like a real Ferrari! LOL
BTW, I'm in Nashville, TN USA.

red or yellow? 1 seat or 2?

Recently I saw a 2 seater and a 1 seater red both asking $5k+ on ebay. Never seen a yellow. Local dave and busters has a pair of red deluxe ones linked. So I bought a pair of rush 2049's and dave and busters never sells its games..

Its such a rare piece, its hard to imagine finding one cheap. But you never know...

FYI, the one that I know if has an asking price of $3k, but I was told $2k when I was buying another game from him. Could've just been a mistake on his part though. Even $2k is out of my range now.

I am supprised you can't find one for $2-3000 by now

I bought F355 and Initial D twin a year or so ago for £3000 I sold one half of ID for £500 so I paid £2000 say for F355

Coming down in price

I didn't really look at the machine much when collecting as I didn't know if the it was all going to fit in the van, as I thought I was only getting ID Single unit

Anyway when I got home and had struggled for an hour or 2 with the girlfriend to get it in the house, I switched it on and it had F355 2 International Course Edition board in it, I was very happy as I had planned to get one if I could, which seems harder than I thought so was very lucky

That one for sale above says Japanese though, but if you get the F355 2 it's only Japanese as it wasn't released over here, but it doesn't cause too many problems ;0)

From what you were told I wonder now how reliable these machines are, Surely if they are that bad, no arcade owner would want one and they would be selling very cheap

However I have had a few issues with mine so far. It died the first night

Though I was told it was going to be all tested and serviced before I picked it up, they lied, it was stored in a warehouse hanger, when I got there, they had heaters warming it up, but all seemed ok

lasted a couple of hours and one screen went blank, end of driving that night

I bought a Jambo safari machine, only wanted the Cart for the Initial D machine, thought the girlfriend would like it, which she did, so I stripped the cab after a while and used the Naomi pcb for F355 and it was working again

You know which board fails as the screen is blank, so easy to diagnose

There is one issue though, there are a 3 types of Naomi boards

2 that have black heatsink on CPU with San Ace Fans, the other has a silver heatsink

I was told only ones with San Ace fans work in Naomi Multi screen machines, I have used both types with San Ace Fans and work fine. No one has confirmed that 4 with Silver heatsink work? but you can't mix them

The boards are connected together with 2 interconnect pcbs, and you have 2 Naomi on the right for right and left screen, 2 on the left, one for the centre screen and the other to tie it all up with the Rom board plugged in like a standard Naomi game.

Audio comes from both left pcbs, one for ear speakers and one for Subwoofer

2 psu's to power it all, so you have a few extra bits over a single Naomi cab

Mine died a few months later again, this time it started running really slow, I swapped the board with another one I bought and ok again, then another one died a few months back and would you believe it, I had a go this afternoon and the same board I swapped last time gone again, just dead.

So thats at least 4 or 5 pcbs i've fitted now and i'm told it's getting harder to find these earlier type. I have just got a few more so have about another 4 to go, but the rate mine have been going that would last about 6 months.

Maybe I have just got a bad one due to storage, I don't know, I've checked all the fans today and the PSU 5v and 3.3v but no issues there.

Depends how much you like the game really and this has been about as reliable as a real Ferrari like you say :0) but it's still alot cheaper than the real thing and I doubt I'll ever own one of them

I haven't played Forza, would like to try it out, though from some videos I still not sure if it beats F355, graphics yes and supposed to be all round better, but I'm not sure

I was going to have a PC setup with 3 screens to save buying one of these, play GTR2 etc but never really got into other Sim Drivers. Then I had the chance to get one so that all went out the window again

I have played Gran Turismo 3 and 4 and don't rate it at all, seems there are quite a few issues to me, Braking is to efficient, you can still slow in time for a corner you didn't know was there, I could win a race the first time round the track? and I always turn the help off, so boring with it on.

It's never made me want to pratice like F355 did, that is very hard and it does feel very rewarding when you win a race, which does take abit of time. I have come 1st and 3rd on Long Beach, I played that loads on the DC previous though, still struggle with Laguna Seca, though after watching this vid I improved my lap time and I have a race today and come 4th

I would be interested to know if you have played Forza and how it compares and is it really that much better, from the Forza forum, the 2nd one was really better?

The other reason I never bothered with Forza was back then, they didn't have a decent wheel on the Xbox, but the 3 screen option was cool

there is a nice F355 Challenge original car for sale near me £40,000 which is not bad, only 100 or so made, has Challenge on the race bucket seats :0)

FYI, the one that I know if has an asking price of $3k, but I was told $2k when I was buying another game from him. Could've just been a mistake on his part though. Even $2k is out of my range now.

Hey AUSTyIN, could you PM me his contact info or have him give me a call @five-oh-two, five-two-three, nine-four-eight-one

Even after reading about all the trouble these things are I'm really curious

Hey Bods, looks like they are more plentiful or just cheaper in Japan and UK. I'll just be patient. I have both Forza 2 and 3 and there isn't much difference that I can see between the graphics and physics between them. Forza 3 adds some cars and tracks and changes the menu style. I loved GT on the PS2 and think the Forza franchise on the Xbox is just as good, especially since it has the multi screen ability. The physics are very realistic and I think it would be pretty similar to the sega F355 Challenge, (one of the cars is the F355 Challenge) if you keep the car stock and turn off some of the driving aids.

Surprisingly I just found this vid on YouTube, this guy must have been reading my mind. What's cool is that he's an arcade collector as well.

check it out:

here's anther guy in Japan driving a Ferrari on three screens.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vrw1QqXw04U

all that talk about the multiple board swaps has me worried too. How much are those NAOMI boards? Are they a type that's specific to the F355 Challenge? meaning can another NAOMI board be loaded with a F355 rom from a computer or something?

I'd like to try to find out if my machine is just been a bad one, I really can't imagine all are so bad

It is just a standard Naomi board in the White plastic case that fits in F355, only it needs 4 of them to run it

I think when the it was out in 1999, it was the most powerful hardware in any game, certainly an arcade game, somewhere says you could link 16 of the boards up

I find it interesting that you have Forza 2 and 3 yet still say you would like a F355 machine, people keep saying it's way ahead of F355 but I am yet to be convinced, I wouldn't say I am an absolute car or race fan like many people, though I have always enjoyed driving games, from Pole Position on the Atari 2600. I did actually make a steering wheel and Pedals from wood when I younger, to play Lombard Rac Rally on the amiga, it only had switches but still made the game so much better

I bought one of the early thrustmaster wheels when they were first out for the PC, but quite a few games never even had support for them

Outrun was so cool when it came out, easy one of the best driving games ever so I bought the sitdown deluxe arcade machine

Having a setup like those in the videos is cool, newer games will keep coming out so it's good, but it's not an arcade machine, F355 is a real thing that was made, will it be worth big money in years to come, I don't know? I would of thought with all the Ferrari people around it might

Apparently they asked people what car should be used in the next sega driving title and it was Ferrari all the way.

This game was made with 1 car, it's got a few tracks, 1 view which to me is all you need, no point driving a car from behind, Attention to detail and working with Ferrari engineers etc vs the others with 500 cars and 100+ tracks, is it better?

It's no where near as fun with out the clutch and gear shifter, specially with the solid feel of everything. The steering goes heavy when you stop completely like a real car, when you brake you get the thud from the subwoofer replicating the heavy braking and car front dipping down. force feedback effects are really good, feel the grip go when you going to fast round a corner. Nice being enclosed in the machine too.

You get more of a feel of speed with the side screens, also Yu Suzuki said it needed 3 screens else things appear to quick with everything cramed into to 1 monitor

I weight it all up and thought as it would cost a alot of money to make a setup like this I would still buy one, even if I didn't keep it for that long, i'm no way bored of it yet, i've only really mastered Long Beach circuit, still a way to go yet on others, I have always got bored with every other driving game way before this

For me it's just something about this game/machine and anything else has alot to live upto

The only thing I would of loved to have seen on this is the full Nurburging circuit, as it's only the F1 part, now that would be driving heaven :0)

Spoke to Bally Ballo who has 2 of these machines, he's not had any problems with his machines until this cold weather

My machine is in the dry warm house as well, so there not bad like mine, I'm just unlucky with these damn machines

Found! Ferrari 355 Challenge DX

FYI, I was contacted yesterday by a gentleman in Washington state that had the 3 screen DX model for sale. Said it was in good shape and was originally in the Microsoft Lobby/arcade in Redmond for most of its life. He wants $3000 for it. Unfortunately it's too far away for me to check out and too expensive to transport. If anyone is interested his name is Joel, email is [email protected]
