My T2 is in storage for the time being. A few months back, I saw the thread about these 90's Midway boards needing to be recapped and the urgency to get it done. I got the cap kits, bought a Hakko 888 (my rig is in storage) and watched Zenomorp's video. Based on the consensus of most people here, I resisted the urge to use a desoldering iron for this project.
One of these boards worked when I put the game in storage, for what that's worth. The other is a spare I bought years ago.
While I'll admit it's been a while since I soldered, I have plenty of experience soldering on these games over the years. It felt like riding a bike. However....
...as people have said, these boards are really bad with the solder pads coming up, even though I was extremely careful. I flowed new solder on top of the old, then used the wick braid to remove the old (as quickly as I could). I kept my iron at 800. I used the techniques Zenomorp recommended, most of which I do anyway. But still, there are for sure some questionable solder joints on these boards. On the second board, one of the traces just came up, and it wasn't at all difficult a joint to clean up.
While I have successfully done a number of cap kits on power supplies, monitors, and boards, I have never done any jumpers. After this experience, I'm not eager to start, especially on these boards. I'm sure there are going to be some caps where this is necessary. I have written down the caps that may be suspect, which should help get started.
Since my game is in storage, I can't troubleshoot these at all. This is going to bother me until I'm able to get this game out of the unit, and it may be a while. I have to take the responsibility, but it hurts. Is there anyone who wants to get me out of this jam and help me get these boards working again?
I should note that it didn't appear that any caps were leaking on either of these boards. I guess that's good news. A number of them tested out of range, though.
