sup all

i am trying to get all the pieces to complete my test station. and i am having trouble trying to locate 2 half sized joysticks.

think the HAPP competition sticks but only about half that size.

i want to make my 1st joystick controller to be semi hand held so i can get to the front of a tube and enter and navigate the test functions and what not when i need to get to a test screen or test a PCB that i get.

they do kinda need to be 8 way but 4 way will be fine.

i have goggled and goggled and goggled but cant seem to find what i am looking for.

i would even buy a toy or something to take the sticks form if need be.

some sticks i have found that may work but the company wants a mint for them and for what i need it is not worth it.

any good places, toys to tear apart or suggestions would be great thanks.

I've done it in the past with just 4 small push buttons laid out in a up-down-left-right diamond - lets face it, it's only for testing, not playing.

Edit - other thing I've done before is gut a SNES or Mega Drive (err... Genesis for you guys) pad and hard wire it as a controller.

never thought about the button idea thanks that may be what i will do.

I have one of those playable Atari key chain joysticks if that can be hacked.

i saw those but could not find one to buy.

any chance on an actual pic with something sitting next to it for size.

they probably can be hacked if i knew what the inside looked like.

i may take you up on that offer.

there's nothing exactly what you are talking about but a Sanwa JLF w/ a shaft cover and bat top cover is pretty close to what you want. They are designed to mount in very shallow CP surface (sheet metal) have a small footprint and throw. The action is very light and crisp but I think that you really are thinking about mounting and size more than anything else.

The handle top can be a ball interchanged to a bat.

They are used in Japanese arcade machines typically.

If you are looking for something really small, I have this portion hacked out of an Xbox controller which is a very small plastic microswitch joystick. It would work really nice in a test harness actually. I have thought about using it in something really small also.

From the website, they are approx 5cm (H) x 4cm (W) x 4.5cm (D). I'll take a pic in a bit though.

yes i thought about them.
and you are rite the foot print is what i am concerned with. it's not much or any smaller than a regular stick.

thanks for the suggestion.

I have a few of these as I build an Xbox 360 interface and pull these out of the joypads.
Pay the shipping and I'll send you one. PM me the details.

They come from a PDP Fighting pad. The ones made for SF4 etc... I use them cause they were $30 on ebay and have a common ground.

I probably can come up with another solution... A common modification for Hori joysticks is to take out their smaller joystick piece and hack in a True Sanwa.

The differences are minor but the hori part is a 80% footprint of a unplated Sanwa. I may have a couple of these laying around at home also.

You can also unplate a sanwa to reduce it's footprint.

those look pretty cool they are low profile and will mount in a small plastic or metal box.

yea i have never seen that game pad before.

i will defiantly take one preferably two that way i can build it small and have both one and two players in one small hand held box for testing. plus the service and test switches.

man that is complicated for such a small thing.

thanks for the pics and taking it apart. now we know what's inside if it.

i am gonna get the thumb sticks from PrairieDillo for now. i think they will do what i need for a test rig.

thanks again for the pics and taking it apart.

i will keep it in mind if theses thumb sticks dont work out.
