Fixing up my Afterburner, and apparently there is no side art available, so...........

I'm thinking of black around the bottom, and silver on the sides, then add furniture tacks to simulate rivets on an airplane wing, then add a final coat of silver, then maybe some airplane graphics, such as FUEL and such

Or........
doing the game in blue and gold, aka the Blue Angels, complet with blue angel decals and such, since that kinda fits the theme of the game, and also because I have met the Blue Angel pilots, and sat in one of the planes

Or.......
silver on sides, then get the large F16 Decal from Fathead or another place, cut it in half, and apply to both sides????

Thoughts?? Other suggestions?? This will probably stay in personal collection for awhile, so I will not care about not having it original......

you all remember what I did to that Frogger??????? HA

Let the voting begin

I know, right?? I suffered some scorn for customizing a Frogger that I posted a while back, because you know how rare those elusive Froggers are!!!!

I would rather do it original, but there is no side art available, and the only site I found that had the bezel decals wanted ridiculous prices for them, seriously, like 15 bucks a decal, and the bezel has 5. Way overpriced..... This isn't a real popular game, so those prices are just silly

I'm also leaning towards the rivet idea, would give it a three dimensional aspect, I always display my games so that the sides are visible, so it would be seen

Do the Rivit idea.
The way I see it, if you bought the game, then you do what you want to it. Even if you restore it back to its original condition someone will complain. LOL!
It's not like you got a Splatterhouse Cab and decided to paint it NEON PINK and put on an X Arcade CP!

I know a guy that can repro the art for you.

He has his afterburner on cl as I'm typing this.
look under mb sc.
His name is Jeremy.
He's a good guy.

I found that guys ad, and emailed him, but it looks like his Afterburner is a conversion, maybe in a Thunderblade cabinet. I'll see if he responds. Thanks for the lead!!

Ok, my two cents.

My rules of thumb are:

1 - Is it rare?

2 - Are you going to screw up original artwork that is otherwise in GOOD shape?

3 - Are you doing anything to it that can't be undone later if you or somebody else wants to restore it to original?

Beyond that, go nuts! :D

Halfway done, sanded, filled, sanded, painted, sanded, and painted!!! Did the bottom area in metallic black, as well as the control panel. I did the top area and main sides in metallic silver, as well as the throttle stick. Sanded and polished all the metsl work, and did the black trim pieces in laquer black, for a nice contrast to the metallic. Looks awesome so far. The rivet idea I was thinking is gonna be too expensive, those furniture tacks are like a dollar each!!! Exploring other options on that. Thinking of a F14 image decal on the sides, with SEGA and AFTERBURNER above and below the image. Still working that idea, but so farit looks great, truly sparkles!! Also need to replace the t molding, and may change the foot rest to diamond plate instead of the flat stainless piece, which is kinda gouged and scraped. Pictures will be soon.............

Since you are going all out...

How about a Jolly Roger on the side like on the tails of Tomcats from VFA-103 squadron?

Looks so badass.

Well, im working on it. Spent all day, but should be done this weekend. I did silver metallic on the upper part, and black metallic around the bottom. Refinished all the metalwork, bunch of new stainless bolts, i put upholstery tacks around the sides like rivets, although i left them black. Working on fixing the coin door lights tmw, and then just waiting for t molding, and custom graphics i am having made. i ordered red and blue t molding, probbly gonna go with blue, but ill see what both look like. Hopefully you guys will approve on what im doing with the sides. Had to go custom due to no sideart available. Spent hours sketching out different ideas... So far, im very pleased.......stay tuned

that pic above was actually what i was going to do if i couldnt save the original art

So no Jolly Roger? I would have gone matte black with yellow t-molding. I assume yours is a upright like this?

...and here I thought that was a Robotech thing.

Worse comes to worst with this cabinet, it just becomes a new restoration project. ;)
