Looking for advice on Guerrilla War..and Hello:)

OK update:

Pics# 1&2&3: I know I had said sand it down, but what I really did was use zip strip and strip off all the coating on the coin doors. Wire brushed too. After I get so clean-you-could-eat-off-it I'll hammer out the dents in the doors. Then it gets primed and painted with a Black hammered finish spray paint.

Pic #4Here is my final wash job on the control panel. It's still dirty but I can't get it any better looking. I'm still going to fix the torn up black area. Full set of brand new buttons on the way. I took apart the joy sticks and cleaned the horrible grime off of them as well as the coin return parts.

Pic#5&6: Started sanding but had to bring it in due to rain. I got it in just in time.

I am really having fun with this project. Yes, I'll keep it for a while but I do hope to sell it at some point for a small profit. Take that money and get another cab to restore. :)

Galaga or an old pinball machine would be sweet but we'll see how this goes first.

use a couple coats of good primer,i would suggest zinsser bin,its brill, then give a light sand before you do the top coat.if you put a single coat of primer on first, then look to see if theres any parts you missed that need filler, fill, then sand then put a coat of primer on after.

i am currently restoring a space zap,the paint was well worn, the usual holes and flaky paint,it had long vertical cracks in the paint work.after a good sand, some p38 filler, good sand and 3 coats of zinsser its well ready now for the top coat.

you get a good seal and cover up with zinsser and its easy enough to sand.
;)

Yep all good advice Saleem! I used to do body work years ago so that's kind of how I am approaching this. I plan on many sand, prime sessions, then 2 or 3 finish coats with a good wet sand in between each one. It may be a ton of work but if I do it right it should look really nice. I still have many hours of hard work hand sanding ahead of me.

JCArcade: I had thought about what you said, send the cpo in for a scan but I think I have to pass on this. I'm on a strict budget with this machine and I know that cpo won't come cheap. I just can't afford it at the moment. I'm sorry because I know there are a few people here who love a clean cpo of this game and that includes me!

I have a real nice bezel for sale

dscn1262.jpg

has no stickers on it like the one you have... intrested let me know

Not too much progress today, I'm kind of at a slow part of this restoration now.

PiC#1: Doing alot of sanding, adding more bondo, sanding again, then wetsanding, etc..Trying to get the cab surface as smooth as glass is the goal.

Pic#2: Fixing damage that I did to the cab when I off loaded the machine from the van. Looks far worse than it is. Will take some work but I should have it smoothed down so you can't see it in no time.

Pic#3: The coin door after several coates of hammered finish black paint. Unfortunately it comes out a really dark gray which is not correct for this machine but with a nice coat of gloss black it now looks wonderful.

Currently I am working on restoring the bezel. I removed a sticker from the Illinois Gaming commision, or something like that but it had a tear under it. It was there I didn't do it.

Pic#4: I have scanned it into my computer, rebuilt the graphic in photoshop which I think came out pretty good, Photoshop print on the left bezel on the right. Now I have to get my printer to print it out in the correct colors. Once I get the correct colors I can print it on photo paper and splice the repaired part into the bezel. It will take a lot of work to get this right. It may not go as planned so Luckyman you may hear from me soon. I love a challenge so I want to see if I can save the bezel and some money in process.

Saturday progress

Starting to get somewhere now.

Pic#1: The coin doors are finished. After what seemed like a hundred coats of hammered finish paint and about 50 coats of high gloss black I think these doors came out good.

Pic#2&3: The cabinet is slowly coming along now. I put on a coat of semi gloss black to make it easier for me to see my poor bondo skills. It will be much simpler now to identify problem spots and fix them. There are many problem areas. A good sanding, final bondo patches applied, sanded, another coat of black then a final wet sand and a coat of black. Taking my time with this but it will be worth it.

Pic#4 The control panel. I've cut some of the loose vinyl away and filled in the open spots with bondo. After many sandings I am going to mask the SNK letters and repaint the entire bottom half of the control panel by hand, palm trees and all. I'm currently testing different black paints to get the right look for this. This part is going to be time intensive.

Sunday progress

Today I am starting to see some of my sanding and bondo work paying off.

Pic#1: This doesn't look pretty at all but trust me it was nice and smooth. This was the first coat all down and ready for the next coat.

Pic#2: The cab had one of those dual light bulb setups. Now I may be wrong but I thought a fluorescent fixture would have been used originally and should be used now. So I tore it out, went to Home Depot and picked up a 10 dollar under cab light, wired it in and now it's ready to go. I just think it will look nicer for a back light to the marquee than a 60 watt light bulb.

Pic#3: The cab with the second coat of paint. Many imperfections still but now it's looking like something. Going with a latex semigloss. It thin stuff so I will give it several coats.

Pic#4: Here is the control panel all taped off. Once I get the front area smoothed out I will spray it with a rustoleum satin black. It's the best paint for the job. After I get the bottom part sprayed I'll remove the tape and start painting the palm trees with a brush using the same paint, i'll spray it into a baby food jar. I'm cautiously happy with how it's turning out so far.

Nearing the final stages

I've sanded and sanded and sanded some more. Layer upon layer of paint. It's now looking pretty good.

Pic#1: Hard to see but this is the final coat. It came out ok considering I don't have a paint booth or room to set one up. I can't tell you how many bug carcas's I sanded off the cab lol.
Pic#2: I'm pretty proud of my repair here. I worked on it for a long time to get it right.
Pic#3&4 the control panel with the final coats of paint. When I remove the newspaper I'll be painting the palms trees and foliage on the horizon.

Pic#5: The front panel. Again fairly proud of this, I had to repair the holes made by the diagonal security bar they bolt to the front of the machine.

Next up: the cpo, mounting a button on the top of the cabinet for free plays, wiring up the coin box and coin returns and whatever else I decide to do.

trick with rolled on paint (if thats how you did the paintwork) is to roll some on,sand down, roll more, sand down then go over with very little paint on the rooler (use fine foam roller, preferably one with round ends) and just roll downwards,in one direction.

also you talk about bugs,so i assume you had a door/window open and light on at night,in the dark?
:)

Yep I rolled it on. Took about 4 coats using black semigloss latex. The first coats I used a 1/4" nap smooth roller which laid it on thick, wet sand and repeat. Dry sand then used foam rollers for the final coats. The first coats were done at night with the garage door open. The final coats during the day with no bugs anywhere to be found.

I'm pretty pleased at how it came out. I'm working on the control panel now. Let's just say I have a ton of work ahead of me there.

I ended up purchasing the bezel from Luckyman, who gave me a great deal on it! Saved me a bit of work.

Next Chapter

Working on the control panel now.

Pics#1&2:I had taped all over the foliage on the cpo and painted it black. I removed the tape sanded down the ridges left from the tape. Painting all the palm trees and foliage with a brush wasn't going to work. So I gave it some thought and decided to tape off as much as I could then fill in all the sky around the trees up close with vaseline. I did it then went over it with several coats of hammered finish paint and several coats of satin black. I have no idea if this will work or not. We'll see.

Pics#3&4: A better pic of the cab paint job and the lock installed in the back of the cab.

Control Panel finished

Here it is all done. Outlining the skyline with vaseline paid off. It's far from perfect but a damn sight better than before. The light gray spots are from me scrubbing the painted vaseline off with a magic eraser. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

The last thing I have to do is setup the free play button on the top of the cab then it all goes back together. Then I need to put my garage back together lol it's a mess!

Thank you! Should be getting the bezel in the next few days I think. I need to vacuum the inside again and clean up some of the electronics and wiring still but she's almost done.

can anyone tell me what stickers snk had on the back of their cab? I took off two, one was a voltage one, which I can find one that's close. I think the other was an fcc sticker. Any GW owners or someone who knows snk cabs able to enlighten me?

Worked on the bezel

Got the bezel today which was damaged in transit. The top and bottom got creased pretty good. So I decided to do a little splicing. I cut off the bad part of my bezel and spliced in the good part of the one I got today. By carefully cutting on the black outline areas and a few inconspicuous areas I joined them together like puzzle pieces. Taped them in the back of the bezel and on the front touched up the black outlines and one orange area. It's actually hard to see it even if you know where it is. Least I think so.

So all's well that ends well :)

Just got in from doing some more work on it.

Pic#1: got the coin mechanism all hooked back up. I need to figure out the wiring as the left side coin mechanism is missing the wires. No biggie it should be a duplicate of the right side.
Pic#2: Added a brass handle to the back. Original? No but a heck of a lot easier to pull it open.
Pic#3&4: Took one of the original player buttons ( I mean it came with the unit when I bought it) mounted it to the top and ran wiring down to the coin box. Hopefully when connected you get a credit every time you press it. Hopefully.

Tommorow I pick up the plexi glass at Hobby Lobby.

As I put it together I keep thinking all that sanding was worth it!

are the coin mechs seperate,ie:does the wiring harness to the door have a wire for coin mech 1 and 2?if so i would run 2 seperate coin mechs rather than be tempted to put both through one wire,ie:they share the same gnd but, each credit switch has a seperate wire that connects to the main harness but, that would just be my preferance, you do what you want.

ditch the brass handle,it looks damn awful.

i think you would have to connect the credit button to the wiring on the credit microswitch on the coin door.

i just got done fitting my midway door to my space zap and wiring up the harness from the coin mechs etc to the main harness.

it has the same quarter price pics as i dont have 10p ones, the coin slots need rechroming and it dont take the 10p coin mechs i have,it only wants to take the plastic quarter ones,it came from usa as this door is hard to find here in uk.
:)

I agree the handle isn't very appealing but I'm going to leave it for now, I will paint it black though. It's not really brass either I found that out when I took a wire wheel to it.

I think there is only one set of wires running to the coin doors but I will make double sure of that. I haven't really looked at the wiring in the cab for it all that closely yet.

The coin doors on your space zap look sweet. I don't think I've ever heard of that game before and I've spent many hours in arcades :)
