I'm looking for a lunar lander wiring harness. I know this will be impossible to find, but stranger things have happened. Let me know. Thank you.

I think an Asteroids will be close with maybe some changes.

I'm actually looking for one too. (Though I haven't been too proactive about it.)

Is Ken at Goldenage making them? I've been meaning to ask around.

I've been going back and forth about trying to convert an Asteroids harness. But it turns out it's not a simple task, it requires a lot of moving and adding of wires, more than just a couple, as you have the coin door wiring to deal with too, which is different. Not impossible, but arguably more expensive time-wise than just buying a proper repro harness, if anyone is making them.

Anyway, just in case you do find a source for more than one. :)

I've already gone down the conversion route. It was a pain and I wasn't happy with the results. Unfortunately Ken isn't able to take it on. There was a thread somewhere where someone else was making harnesses, so there is a chance there is a reproduction floating around somewhere.

For what it's worth, this would go to a good cause. I have Lunar Lander #16 that is otherwise in great condition. If anyone has a LL harness I would be eternally grateful!

Yeah, the conclusion I came to is that it would almost be easier to just make a simplified harness from scratch (like maybe omitting most of the coin door wires, and anything else non-critical), than converting an Asteroids.

You might be thinking of the old 'Level99' LL harness thread, however that person ended up being RAM Controls.

We also mentioned it in Charles's thread, below. (Charles, maybe consider doing a run? If you were to post an interest thread, I would sign up immediately. And I know from the archives here that there have been others looking, since it doesn't look like Ken has made them since 2015.)

So.... I looked into this also, because I got a dedicated control panel and wanted to convert my asteroids cabinet.

The hardest part is the connector for the control panel. This is obsolete, and I can't find one anywhere. I looked. So if you want to make a harness, you'll need to be okay using an alternate part.

Otherwise, the wire routing is at least the same as asteroids, so you should be able to use an asteroids harness as a template at least, partially reusing it if desired. I only partially converted my harness, as I still have an Asteroids PCB at the core of the machine.

That part isn't necessarily that huge of a problem, as you can use two smaller connectors instead of the one huge one. From what I remember, you'd sorta have to do this anyway, because of where the Asteroids connectors are located, relative to the LL one. You'd end up needing to cut the Asteroids connectors off, then extend a bunch of wires up to the CP, and add the alternate connectors. Or, extend the CP wiring to reach down to where the Asteroids ones are.

Though if you're building one from scratch, you could also potentially forego a CP connector entirely, and just run the harness wires all the way to the CP controls directly. (Since how often do you need to pull off the whole CP with a single connector anyway?) These things were made with modular CP's and coin doors, to allow operators to swap them out quickly. But we don't have that need. If you did need to completely remove the CP from the cab for some reason, you could just unplug all of the wires at the individual controls, if they all have slide-on connectors.

Again, none of it is impossible, but it ends up being a non-trivial amount of work to convert. The idea of just starting from scratch ends up looking like less work in the end. (Or at least that was the conclusion I came to when I dug into it.)

I wonder if maybe there is some other harness that might be an easier starting point to convert from. There's no reason to need to start with an Asteroids. Like maybe something else that has a lot of wires going to the CP already. Space Duel, perhaps?

I don't remember the control panel connector being a problem. I'll have to check what I originally tried. Maybe I just used a Space Duel connector? Those do have a lot of pins.
