Hey guys I am looking for a good B pin to get as my first pin, I really don't want to spend more then 2k'ish. What do you guys think would be a good first pin? Funhouse is my pin grail but I know those are more expensive then what I can afford right now. I was thinking along the lines of

Jack bot
T2

looking for a real sleeper pin for a reasonable price

For $2K you should be able to score something decent, A or B category!
Unless pricing is different where you're at?

Judge Dredd is an awesome game for the price. BSD might be a tough game as a first game since it's not very forgiving.

You have options. You should elaborate more on what kind of play style you like (short game time, long game time, stop-and-go, etc.) and whether you want something that will be solid and reliable or something you can mess with and learn repair, whether theme means a lot or not, etc. Also, keep in mind you could get a much cheaper EM game as an option.

Maybe even a real nice No Fear... cough coughhaveoneforsale cough cough LOL

If you have 2 grand to spend. Honestly pretty much sky is the limit. There are only about 10-15 fully functioning non project titles that you wont be able to buy.

If you can wait a bit, there is the midwest gaming classic coming up in a month just a few minutes north of you in Brookfield (milwaukee) where there will be many pins to try out and play to find the special one you want to bring home.

SOme OK suggestions here. I would add a few more like Starship Troopers, Tales form the Crypt, Last Action hero.

But my #1 rec would be WPT. It's a friggin' Steve Ritchie/Keith Johnson game, fer chrissake! Best bang for the buck in pins bar none, and can be found in nice shape for around $2k. Awesome rules, killer flow, tons of drop targets, and the rules and feature integration are second to none. It's a fun game for novices and a seriously deep, strategic game for pin pros. And the music is simply awesome too--nonstop cool guitar riffs.

There's only one serious candidate if you're buying a $2k pin: WPT.

I think this may have been the first time I've seen Starship suggested for anything but parts! :)

Agreed on WPT, great game but theres a bug in the software that Stern never fixed. At some point the game will lose track of the balls and the only way to reset it is to turn it off. Usually happens after a Mulitball.

Christ...that's a killer. I thought it looked interesting enough to go look at a video of it until just now. Urgh. Wonder if that's something that can ever be fixed with a rom hack/patch....

Really? (re: WPT bug) Never noticed it after tons of games. If anything, it's pretty rare as most games include at least one MB, if not more (and stacked ones!)

As for SST, I really like the game. Have played it a lot. Solid shots/layout, decent rules, level bonuses, standup shooting challenges. Yeah, the bug screeches can get a bit old, so I wouldn't crank this one up!

There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for WPT. The last few machines I had were running version 12.0 software. Stern has 14.0 posted so I imagine that they fixed the lost ball issue...

Yup - in the change log "Fixed multiball deadlock issue."

thanks for all the great idea's. I was at a friends house today who has around 10 pins. I REALLY enjoyed playing Star Trek Next Gen, Funhouse, and Attack from Mars. He was saying could prob get into a next gen for mid to upper 3's...

You are on the right track, go and play the games, then decide what YOU like. Don't rely too much on theme, though it should matter at least a little. Figure out what you do and don't like about certain games. Fast gameplay, stop and go gameplay, mini playfields, big ramps, playfield toys, light shows, drop targets.... Etc.etc.

Don't just go by what others say. I've played a lot of different pins, as most here have, and what's rated highest isn't always what you will like best. I think even more true than that is, what games others bash on and rate low, are often more fun than you might think.

For example I have a really nice Twilight Zone. It's rated no. 1 on the IPDB list. Yet it is currently up for trade for a B-list game. I just don't play it as much as my other two pins. I've tried really hard to love it, but I don't. I'd rather play my BSD or Dirty Harry. You just don't know until you put some time on them ;)

erp. STTNG? noooooo WPT is twice the game at about half the price. FAR better games to be had in the mid/upper 3's too.

I agree to the last action hero and starship troopers both are very fun and can be bought at or under a grand a piece.

I took a look at WPT and it looks great. I play a lot of poker so I would be all over a poker themed game. It looks like a lot of fun. Now to find one priced right
