U15 on the CPU board to be specific. Looks like WoW uses the same part.

Anyone know where I can get this custom IC?

EDIT: Looks like Sapce Zap uses the same part. Man, I dont want to kill another game to fix this one but there are no options as far as I can tell.

that's a good point. the U15 ic yer looking for on the cpu board is:

2721-(0066-116) data custom chip

how come nobody has reverse engineered this ic yet via fpga dammit! save the gorfs!

Yeah, its going to suck to have to kill another Gorf, a WoW or a Space Zap to fix this thing.

I dont have any other options though.

shit, why hasn't anyone FPGA-ed this era of the games??

Disclosure: I modified the quote slightly for brevity

I have often wondered this myself. I have heard that one of the chips has some kind of resistor pack in it (the reason it runs hot) and you can't just do an FGPA. Still, with all the awesome stuff being done today I'm sure it can be done somehow.

It would also be cool if the Votrax SC-01 speech chip could be reproduced as they are hard to find also.

We can only live in hope.

I think the answer to why they haven't been reproduced is because they're only used in 3 games. :p It doesn't seem like they fail THAT often, and are still available for a reasonable price (even if that's buying an untested boardset to pull from).

I actually talked to someone who created a repro SC-01 chip a few years ago... he said it wasn't worth his time to actually make a plug and play chip for sale yet, since working originals still popped up for ~$25. And the SC-01 fails more often, and is used in a lot more games (and even talking robots, etc). He said maybe he'd do it once they become really scarce.

Yeah probably because they want to sell there stock out first for top dollar before anyone take the plunge into reproducing them. :D

Its used in more than three games.

-professor pacman
-10 pin deluxe
-robby rotto
-gorf
-wizard of wor
-Space Zap (I was not aware of this one)

I would say the SC-01 are already really scarce. I only know of one person selling them and that is the guy on ebay. I had about a dozen tubes of them but down to my last tube. Keeping those for my own use. Yeah, someone should make these and the customs.

wasnt aware of the others, thanks for adding them to this thread.

I think the real problem with the SC-01 reproduction was that it basically used an MCU to translate the SC-01 commands to the SpeakJet... which by itself is a $25 chip. So, by the time you add the cost of the MCU, SpeakJet, PCB, connectors, etc... there's just not much room for profit.

This was the guy: http://www.robotworkshop.com/robotweb/?page_id=57 .
