So my Altered Beast Cab no longer wants to hold high scores or bookkeeping records. I always believed this to be a cap problem, but here is where my issue lies.

1) Is the cap(s) for this on the boards itself? I have no schematics to identify my board, and all caps visually look fine.

2) Incidentally I noticed in my search that some caps in the power supply look like they are in need of replacement. Are the caps which hold highscore/bookkeeping info in the power supply??

3) I have 3 pics of my Peter Chou. 2 pics are the same caps from diff angles and are 200v 100mf you can see the wrap on one of them is shriviling. The substance you see on the suspect cap is hard and looks to be glue, not electrolytic fluid. Then there is 1 pic which shows a cap that is shriveled on one side, and has no markings except that it's on a L3 plug in spot. It almost looks bootleg.

Do these look like culprits, or are they just an incidental find?

The L3 is not a cap it is voltage limiter, they rarely fail. Your power supply does not supply any power to the board when it is powered down it has nothing to do with the high score saves. It is much more likely that there is a battery on the board that need to be replaced.

Any idea which or where that cap could be that Im looking for?? They all look fine and I dont know where to start. I wish I had some sort of schematic. Anyways since I took the pic of the 2 black ones side by side is it safe to say I should replace the one with the glue all over it and shriveled wrap?

Your digging in the wrong hole here. Your problem lies on the main pcb and could be a simple battery replacment. What game is it, post a good picture of the game pcb. It might not have a battery, some use nvram to store data. An NVram is basically a ram with an internal battery.

Edit: nevermind, see its an altered beast. Post a pic of the game board so we can see what you have.

I looked into this a little but no luck finding a manual with schematics. Are you having any sound issues? Apparently there is a custom chip with a battery inside that can be replaced with a standard Z80. It will also require one rom be swapped out as well. Im not sure if this same battery is used for book keeping and scores but I would imagine it does.
