I am hoping that I can go from total n00b to experienced in board repair to help my own cause and others. One of the critical tools in the arsenal is a local probe. I realize this is a pretty straightforward device, but I was wondering if there were any makes/models that users have found useful from a standpoint of LEDs, tones, etc...

I did a search on here, but the best I can find is "it's the best $25 investment you'll make" :)

I found an Elenco LP-900, which is a probe and pulser (whatever that does) for about $25, but was curious what others have used.

TIA,
Evan

I'd stay away from the probe/pulser combo...

Get a logic probe with audio capabilities. As you build experience with using it you CAN hear a difference in the circuit.

Ebay has tons of them. I happen to like this style:

I like the size. Some of the others are boxy and are clumsy to hold.

PS: Disclaimer: The above is just an example. It is not an endorsement of that particular model of logic probe or the seller. I have no vested interest in the seller. There are quite a few others on eBay that would work just as well.

Does your post contain peanuts, or was it processed in a facility that processes peanuts and other tree nuts?

I, myself, do not have an allergy. But I'm deeply concerned for those who might.

No, no peanuts intended, but it might contain shellfish (specifically crabs) :D.

Not too long ago somebody was looking for a similar logic probe and I grabbed a picture from eBay. It turned out to be a listing by a new alias for a notorious jackhole (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=84) and somebody actually tried to buy it. I believe he did eventually get the logic probe, but if you read any of the postings you will know why I am a little gunshy of even the implied endorsement of this piece of work.
