Literal truckload of Sanyo EZs

Yeah, I'm gonna have to do this soon. I've got a mini Sanyo that is rusted beyond belief, but works perfectly. I was gonna try Evaporust, but painting it might be easier.
Believe it or not I actually did soak the neck protector in evaporust. The rest I used a wire wheel. After I rattlecanned it. Don't just paint over the rust.

There are plenty of choices in the gray/silver Rustoleum family to choose from. You really can't go wrong if you select something somewhere in the middle. Just look at what a normal frame looks like and compare it to a spray paint cap.

Ya'll are a bad influence on me

Awesome!

As you can see from the thread I linked, I've used that method quite a few times. Works great, costs essentially nothing, and you can see the rust bubbling off within 30 seconds if you hooked it up right.

Looking forward to seeing your results.

Yeah, I've done this before on a motorcycle tank; I guess it was pretty obvious but to your point about vinegar: even at $5 a gallon, this container holds about 5 gallons as you see it. The box of washing soda was $8. I have 5 more frames to de-rust!

If you look closely my anode is an old security door that I cut in half :)

Yeah, I can't see any use for vinegar anymore.

It's dog crap slow, it's 100x more expensive, and it stinks your place up.

Like with many de-rusting methods, after the electrolysis, your parts will probably be black. Many ways to restore the shine at that point, I use a wire wheel.

If you are painting, I believe people think that black layer (iron oxide) is actually a useful primer for painting. I'm not sure.

The witches' brew has been bubbling overnight and it's looking great. I scraped off the anode and moved it to another side. I'll check back after work.

I have heard from a friend of a friend that maybe or possibly one could in theory that you could maybe zinc plate metal but you best not breath in those fumes.

Remember the internet search engine can get you into to trouble..

Indeed, I got the black stuff. Crap, was really hoping to not have to grind too much. I left it in the tank until tomorrow

Apparently a pressure washer might help:

A pressure washer sounds like a great idea, I might try that next time.

The black stuff comes off relatively easy, I think some people just use plastic scrub brushes, green scotch brite pads, etc.

You might also research the claim that the black stuff is a good painting primer...are you planning to paint the parts?

Yeah, probably will paint just to protect it. I have a piece a brief scrub with a wire brush and I'd say it was medium difficulty.

Reveal day!

Final after pressure washing. This was the "turbo" nozzle which is basically a zero degree tip that spins. I've stripped paint off with it. Overall it was like Bedliner before and after it's reasonably smooth. If it a surface that I was going to see and touch, I'd probably sand it better, but this is good enough:

Can see the rust just melted off.

The black crap is a little unpleasant to remove, but actually fun for me because I can see it starting to gleam.

Quick primer, because it's what I had. I would have just painted it with grey, but I was worried about flash rust:
