Please don't flame me because I want to talk about MAME. You guys know I love dedicated arcade machines and even got rid of my MAME machine last year.

I have access to quite a number of USB thumb drives at work and I even have one that's wafer thin. I decided to put MAME on it and keep it on my keychain. My thought is to have all of the games that I can play off of the thumb drive and have the best stuff on the go. Most likely it'll be single player although I do have a super small USB controller made by Sanwa.

I just want to be able to break out with an awesome game at anytime...

So what are all of the games that don't need special controls, can be played well on a keyboard and not so big that they hog up a thumb drive? (1 gig)

You could actually fit a lot of games on 1GB assuming the MAME files don't take up too much space. For your thumb drive and assuming you don't want to use a huge joystick or controller attachment, I would think older games that use 0-2 buttons would be preferable for ease of use and they usually take less space. All the Pac-Man games, Non-steering/track ball Atari games, Nintendo games, Beat'em Ups (TMNT, Golden Axe, X-Men), etc. The list could go on and on really.

Though, I have MAME setup on my Asus 10.1" netbook with Maximus Arcade frontend. I use an Xbox to USB adapter so I can use an Xbox controller. It's my portable arcade. :)

The list is far too large to put into a post here. Most games can be played just fine from the keyboard or your controller.

Your best bet is go through MAME on your computer and pick the games you like. MAMEUI itself is under 40MB, which leaves a lot of room on a 1GB drive.

I have my favs of course... just thinking out loud to see if anyone else wants to chime in with must haves...

I sometimes carry around a Dingoo. It's slightly smaller than an iPhone, has a directional pad, four buttons, two shoulder buttons, speakers, earphone jack, AV out. I have over 100 MAME ROMs on it, plus over 100 NES, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo and Colecovision ROMs. Plays `em all.

The most frequent MAME games I play on it are Mappy, Sunsetriders, Simpsons and Indy Heat. Quick pick-me-up types of games.

Within a few months, I'll have a Pandora. Similar, but includes two analog sticks, touch-screen, full keyboard (for old computer games), bluetooth, and two SD card slots. About the size of a Nintendo DS.

It is really eye opening when one starts looking at the MAME ROMS of games from the early 1980's. In a gig one could store so much stuff. :)

You pre-ordered one? That is one expensive handheld MAME machine. Haha. That's cool though. It looks really nice.

I did, and yeah, it's very expensive. It's like paying for the develpment costs up front. :(

But, the key difference is that it'll do what no hacked/modified PSP will do: play old computer games (keyboard + processing power). So, in addition to MAME ROMs and all other ROMs on the planet, save anything newer than PS1, it'll play games like Zork, The Hobbit, Ultima, Farenheit 451, all of the original Sierra graphic adventures, X-Wing, Alley Cat, Test Drive, and the bazillion other PC / Apple / Amgia etc titles that you can't carry around with you unless you have a netbook or a laptop. :)
