I am doing some research on Daytona USA... I'm about to get two uprights. I just read, in my searching for info about this game, that the uprights do NOT have comm boards to link to each other? Is this a simple matter of getting the boards and the link cable to make this work, or do they flat out not link no matter what?

I understand the boards in all of these are the same, minus the com board. Anyone that owns these that knows for sure, can you tell me if you can add these? If so, where? And also, where does one buy a link cable for these?

Final final question, but what goes wrong on these. What's a common issue I should be aware of on these?

Theoretically, you can just add the com board. However, you first need to make sure the filter board has the Toslink connectors. It should as Daytona uses the more poulated filter boards. Of course, if you get close enough to check that, you should also pop the cover off the cage and see if the boards have the com board aready in there. It wouldn't surprise me if they had it.

I have seen some crazy configurations on Sega boards over the years. For instance, I have found several Lost World (Model 3) stacks that came with com boards, and that game never supported such a feature. Most I've found haven't had the com board, but they are out there. I get the impression that Sega was not too concerned with errors such as this, so you might luck out and find those Daytonas are ready to link.

Radiac, I hope you're right, but based on what I've seen... they don't. Not THESE models, but in general, stand ups just don't. Hope I'm wrong.

What kind of optic cable? A cable I can go and buy at a store, or what?

Yes, they use standard digital audio optical cables. You can buy them at most stores. This is the type of cable on Amazon. You will need a pair of cables to link two cabs, and of course make sure they are long enough to go fromcab to cab.
