lighted atari cone button question

I went to Rat Shack and scoured thought the leds. Only 5 volt ones I found were blue. I found 12 volt red. Most were 1.7 v to a max of 3.6 v. I ended up picking up an assortment pack. The guy at the counter said they were 12 volt as there was no markings. Well, most of those popped when 5 v was applied. Only one that didn't were grean and they don't look good under the red button cover. It got very hot also. Would the 12 v red ones light up enough with 5 v applied? I could run a line from the PS to the CP off the 12 v if needed.

The original LEDs are just regular ones with a standard diode drop... they are not 5V or 12V. When testing them you can't just put 5V across them, as that is not what the game board does. The PCB has current-limiting resistors on it.

I gotcha. In this instance, it is a multigame 60 in 1. I just want them to light up on the panel to give a somewhat original illusion. Thanks for the link on the magnifying stand.
