let's Talk seriously about LCD Monitors

I just think it's a slippery slope.. If you're not going to run an original monitor, why run an original power supply, why bother running an original boardset -> go with a 60-in1, -> go with MAME.

Seems to me that its been heading that way for a while now (e.g., the plague of 60-in-1 machines that litter the market.) Years ago, the mere mention of something like MAME would draw a ton of boos and hisses from the majority of the community. Nowadays, MAME, multiboards, LCDs and all the rest of it seems to be largely accepted. The true preservationists seem to be a declining niche of the current collecting community, and with the increasing non-purist attitudes, it'll be really interesting to see what the state of the hobby is a few years from now.

I agree. What would be interesting is to see all this new tech used to finish, in my opinion, some unfinished games. What if missile command had an ending? What if spy hunter had a graveyard level. Instead of coming up with new games, why not do what couldn't be done in 1983. What about a helicopter morph in spy hunter? Off topic, yeah. But why not? And in the process use a monitor that uses 1/4 of the power, a cpu the size of a biscotti, you know, that missile command cabinet with the big lights on top that were ommited because they might be distracting. That would be a cool state of the hobby. Hot rodded arcade games, yeah that's the ticket!

That's been my experience with every K7000. This last month I've rebuilt the flyback twice on two K7000's and cap'd them both each time...still dead as shit. :(

It's preference. I prefer the CRTs in my machines and can only imagine going LCD if I wanna run a more modern game out of a cap (Super Street Fighter IV for example). With that said, eventually (10-20 years from now...maybe 30), however, the CRT tubes are gonna be so obsolete from our society that we'll be lucky to find a non-burn 19/25 inch tube in the trash, let alone off craigslist (I guess it won't be our problem though, since we'll all be too old to lift a damn monitor, let alone work up the strength to play our games :p).

As for being legit on the internals of a game, the proper boardset and a CRT are what is important to me. Original power supply is icing, but if I gotta run a switching power supply to keep my Pole Position running, that's what I am doing.

Maybe this could be helpful. Scroll down to page 4.

Missile Command does have an ending, though its a Donkey Dong kind of thing not a "Congrats, you did it!"... The game shuts down when you build up too many reserve cities.

I really don't want any of the gameplay things you want, but wouldn't mind having a solid source for new multisync CRT's. I don't hate LCD's the way some people do, but the CRT's do look way better.

No worries... most of KLOV guys' kids are going to continue in their parents footsteps, preserving and restoring classic games. AHAHAHAHAHA!!

Doesn't look like my offspring will be carrying on after me. The older my daughter gets, the less of a crap she seems to give about Dad's arcade. :(

(I'll be adding a Mushroom World pin soon, so I'm hoping her love of Princess Peach and the Mario universe will get her fired up for this addition to the ol' arcade.)
