Progress!
The cabinet is all stripped and sanded down. The front panel had some serious structural issues that needed to be fixed. It looked like someone might have tried to break into it at some point, and the whole front panel might have slid out. Someone tried to put some patch wood in there by screwing it in from the sides (ouch). Of course that all had to go so I could fix it the right way.
I added supports to the inside of the cabinet, and built up the missing wood with bondo. I put some nails and wire inside to form/support it. Smoothed out the rest with a bit of joint compound. It looks worse in the pictures than it actually is, it's rock solid now!
Yes I stripped down a Defender cabinet, but it's nothing that wouldn't have been done to restore it anyway. I plan on painting it black, so one could re-stencil it if they wanted.
