So I started building my Jamma test rig. Its coming along nicely. Just need to
finish wiring it up. Its big but totally self contained and will support a
Commodore 1084 monitor on top of it on my bench. It can send the video to
the 1084 or send it to an external source to test a monitor via a switch. It
has a built in 5V Voltage adjustment for the linear power supply with an led
voltmeter readout, speaker, fan, and will be able to power a game board and
external monitor from the built in isolation transformer. Oh and the joystick is
above the CP switchable from 4 way to 8 way.

The blue portion is steel cut on my cnc plasma. The white is melamine.

What cool things have you done building your rig? Super small? Portable? Built
in monitor? Ghetto rig?

Lets see um.

This was built out of scraps of wood, scraps from several wiring harnesses, and spare parts that were dust collectors. It actually plays pretty well and has opened up my collection to a lot of fun horizontal JAMMA games. Very worthwhile project in the end, I guess you can say I was desperate for a cab!

Mostly finished:

Mine is still a work in progress still haven't got everything I need up and working like volume control and the test switch. I also need to build some sort of enclosure and put some molex disconnects so I can remove and store the controls.

Eagle, good idea using a console controller instead of a joystick and button with microswitches. How did you make that adapter for the controller? I want to see how it's wired up.

Some quick details are in this thread:

Instead of hijacking, I'll update that thread with pics of the inside of the Genesis controller over the weekend. I just realized that I didn't reply to Modissit's detailed monitor sync post either.

Some of you guys have some really nice looking test rigs... I went with a simple box to hold the VGA converter, a speaker, and a JAMMA harness. Then I added a couple buttons for coin, test, service, etc, and Genesis controller connectors for the player inputs. I use an old Happ switcher as my test bench supply with banana sockets on it, so I put bananas on the test box to connect to that supply. Then I've got a monitor mounted on my wall that I plug the test rig into.

About the controller, the Sega Master System controller is basically wired like an arcade controller, where each pin is grounded for each button press, and the Genesis controller is backwards compatible with Master System, so looking at the pinout, you can easily see how to wire that up. Here's a thread on it as well: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=185025 .

Holy crap Malice, I saw that thing sitting in your garage and because it was on its side, it didn't even click as to what it was. Nice work!

Wow these are all really nice.. I really love the portable ones in a suitcase.
I so wish I would have thought of that now. I can just imagine the
looks you get tec9 popping that thing open at an auction and firing up a video game.

Wow, all of these are sweet. The portable ones are cool, but for a bench top one, Malice's is the shiznit! Have you thought about offering a "kit" or just the cnc'ed panel? I would love to have one as clean looking as yours.

dont think i can follow much with all them buttons !

long leads for reaching into the cabinet and wall
the one harness is just pins at the end for pinning into the control panel connector
or just take wire and ground it for switch test, coins and plays

the board is a HOT SHOTS TENNIS
fun game even if you dont like tennis

Now show us your jamma adapters....

How about a missile command to centipede to Jamma with an older mouse modified to simulate a trackball?

Yes I built the missile command to centipede adapter using a pac man filter board.....

Is yours wired for all three buttons + start?

Yep, decided to padhack the controller.

I made this a long time ago....to test PCB's at the auctions:

Little known fact, Tec9's briefcase was the inspiration behind mine. I saw what he made (way back in the day) and was immediately enamored. In fact, mine is such a rip off of his, I even have the same LCD panel (GameVue) I'm planning on installing, and the briefcase is also extremely similar.

all really well done test gear guys I want one...but damm Tec the James bond briefcase is a Yahtzee!!

Yup, Tec9 is the man!!!

Malice's is the shiznit! Have you thought about offering a "kit" or just the cnc'ed panel? I would love to have one as clean looking as yours.

This ^^^

Wanna sell me one of the metal cut panels? :)

I'd love a kit, or detailed parts list with CNC panel, or just the panel at a minimum. Can you CNC cut the wood sides too?

This is bad-ass. Nice work!

Pictures have been posted in the following threads:

The wiring for the box where the Genesis controller is very straightforward... Basically:

Pin 1 - Up - JAMMA 18
Pin 2 - Down - JAMMA 19
Pin 3 - Left - JAMMA 20
Pin 4 - Right- JAMMA 21
Pin 5 - Button B - JAMMA 23
Pin 6 - Button A - JAMMA 22
Pin 7 - Button C - JAMMA 24
Pin 8 - Ground - JAMMA 1 (or any other ground)
Pin 9 - Start- JAMMA 17

I wired Coin 1, Coin 2, Test, and Service switches to the physical buttons in the break-out box.
