I have been Playing Lunar Lander all night tonight. In a few months I hope to make a film for Twin Galaxies and make a run for the top score.

This will take alot of practice, I cant be at the Lunar Lander arcade every minute to train. So I found this other training tool.

Me and Brian Kuh will drop by to make sure your motherboard is legit.

Come on over.:) You can bring Brian and Walter, just dont bring Roy Shildt, aka "Mr. Awesome" Met him at the seattle show "WOW" Strange dude!!!
here are the setting from Twin Galaxies. The only thing the Twin Galaxies site does not show is which of the 4 mission settings are they playing on???

Variation:points Platform:ArcadeRules:8-Toggle Dip Switch On Lunar Lander PCB (At P8)
1-5 = ON
6 = OFF/UNUSED
7 = ON
8 = OFF Note: The above Dip Switches, are not only the FACTORY DEFAULT settings, but are also the correct Twin Galaxies Tournament Settings for this title and will provide the following settings; English Instructions
750 Fuel units Per Coin

why bother with tg? the satisfaction of doing it here should be enough why go through all the hassle for thier approval? who needs the biased acceptence!

Bragging rights:D

I still need alot of practice. If I filmed tonight I could only grab 9th place.

Give it time...

I am sure you will be getting high scores in no time. You should practice with wolfmame and then you could submit that score to TG. The nice thing about LL is you can play a full game in under 10 min. I got most of my practice in on LL at work. In fact the best score I ever got was one I did at work. 2,020 pts :) The guy I work with got very addicted to the game as well after watching me play it so much. He has the #2 slot and I have the #1 for MAME. He is always talking about his LL score (its the only one he has) so if you want to beat 1,225 pts and submit it you wont hear any complaints from me as it might take some of the wind out of his sail. lol Actually he would probably welcome the challenge and try to win back his spot. I wish I had access to a LL arcade game I think with a little practice and some luck I could beat the 1540 for the top slot or at least come close. Best of luck to you and keep us posted on your attempt.

Wow those are good scores. Is REV2 harder or the same? All I really know about REV2 is that you have the option to start with more fuel.

So what have you learned from the game any tips?

tips...

The way I understand it it is the same game. With TG you can only start with 1 credit which is 750 units of fuel. As far as tips I just played it ALOT and some of it is the luck of the draw on this game (what landing spots come up) for instance if you get a 5x landing spot on the left side of the main peak in the middle of the screen this is the best place to land that yields max points with minimum fuel used. I have landed at that spot in only 36 sec using less than 110 units of fuel before but its tough to do in under 38 sec. More time = more fuel. Also if you have to go over that peak that I just mentioned you need to give it full throttle ASAP cause the closer you get towards the lunar surface the more gravity pulls you down and prevents you from moving towards the right unless you use tons of fuel. Also the max landing speed you can land at for full points (and bonus fuel units) is 15fps. If you land at 16fps you will bounce and it will not give you full points. This game takes considerable skill I have not played it for a few months and I went to play it the other day and I had a hard time breaking 1,000 and back when I was playing it a lot more I could always break 1250 almost everytime. I have exceeded 1540 probably over 10 times but only hit over 2,000 once. Usually I score between 1,250-1,500 if I am all practiced up. You can check out my TG submission here:

I love sharing techniques as I welcome the potential challenge. If you beat my score it will give me something to work for trying to beat it back. :)

I do this pretty much the same, I have very few games that I get 5x landing spot on the left side of the main peak that many times in a row.

I would agree it was pretty rare to get that many good landing spots in a row. I think I had what 6 in a row that were efficient then the tough 5x way off to the right which is tough to land on without using a ton of fuel then one more efficient 5x than a 4x controlled crash which I just barely pulled off as just one of the landers feet hit the 4x spot right as I ran out of fuel. If I don't get the efficient landing spots in a row I can still get a high score and it looks more impressive visually however if you want to break 1,750 you have to get the efficient spots and often so there is the randomness involved and you have to put in the time in order for things to line up well statistically. Its a skill + luck + spending the time in sort of thing.

Practice Practice Practice. Im going to have to start filming soon. Got enough tonight on my Dedicated Lunar Lander to take 5th. Only 425 points from 1st!!!:D I only had 1 5x landing spot on the left side of the main peak in the middle of the screen. The PCB picks these X spots random. If I can get a few more on the left of the main peak im there!!

Just played again 375 points from from #1!!

1200 points thats good enough for 4th:eek:. almost had enough for 2nd if I had not boned the last landing for 250 points. I think its almost time to film !!

The training tool blows.

You start the game with your thrusters on max? WTF?

Half the time I hit the spacebar for my 'abort', the keystroke isn't registered or it takes seconds to be registered. WTF?

The thrust control isn't momentary -- it's an on/off thing?

The trainer *looks* good but MAME kicks its sorry ass.

getting close...

It sounds like you are really getting close to the WR! Thats awesome! Whats your highest score so far then? I have been playing it some more on mame lately after taking a several month hiatus. I think I am getting practiced up again as I just hit 1750 a little bit ago. You are lucky you have access to a actual machine. The only real original arcade I have is centipede (I do have a 60 in one but you cant submit on those obviously) but I have been thinking about submitting a score on my centipede but so far the best I can do is 167,xxx and thats not good enough yet for me to take the time and effort to submit a tape. The nice thing about wolfmame and TG is its so easy to submit a score via online submission. I just submitted a Q*bert score and they accepted it in like 3 days! I did hit $141,xxx on Q*bert on TGTS which is where you stop playing at the end of your 5th guy which isn't bad for me. Be sure to let me know how bad it was on submitting a tape and how long it took them to accept it and if you have any problems ect...

Congrats, almost there!

How long does a world record level game of Lunar Lander last?

Around 10 minutes if you mess up you run out of fuel. You only get 750 units of fuel. Your very lucky if you can Land once buring a little more than 100 units.
So its 5-7 landings if you dont mess up. If you crash it takes some of your reserve fuel!!

My highest so far was 1480 last night. im getting 1200 or better on most plays now. The machine picks the bonus landing spots. I have yet to get the landing spots I really want. I know it will happen.

1480! Almost there...

Sounds like you are getting really good at LL. I bet it will just come down to the luck of the draw and getting good landing spots ect and you will have that 1540 beat. Have you submitted a tape to TG before? Was it a PITA? Do you have any other records with them?

 LOL more like a several day hiatus maybe a week or two at the most.....not several months....LOL.... you have to know itetcboo like I do, he is obsessed with LL.
However, he is pretty good and holds the WR in mame.

Keep going DJW90 you are almost there!!!
