Tell me if I sound crazy.

You know, wouldn't it be really nice if there was an app for your phone where you could take a picture of a connector in one of your machines and it would tell you what type of connector it is and the part number for sourcing replacements and mates? I mean, electrical connectors are made of simple geometry that should be easy enough to algorithmically recognize from a photo, so this should work.

Well, there's already an image recognition search app. However, it doesn't do very well with electrical connectors -- yet. It does have a suggestion option, and I figure, if enough people go through their machines and take pictures of electrical connectors, and add in suggestions for the type of connector it is, then maybe Goggles will start recognizing most connectors.

Am I crazy? Or could this work?

There are really very few different type connectors used on arcade machines. Wouldnt it be much easier to just familiarize yourself with them?

That hasn't been my experience. Certain things like ticket mechs are standardized, but it seems like every manufacturer uses something different for internal connections. Then again, I work primarily on newer games with a disproportionately large amount of redemption.

Yeah, I was thinking more of the classic stuff. I know alot of the newer stuff has moved to the smaller connectors since they tend to have more wires.

As a Nintendo fanboy, I couldn't disagree more :) Every damn N* thing uses something different than everyone else and different than the last damn N* thing, hehe (they even have their own unique Molex profiles!). In my experiences, Molex and AMP connectors are a rarity (even though they're the most common).
