As there is a thread for side scrollers and it seems to be revolving fighting or adventure how about a side scroller shooter discussion?

My top choices of interest would be

Saint Dragon
Air Wolf
P47
R-Type

Michael

Progear. Side scroller, but plays more like a vertical shooter.

In the hunt. Artwork has a metal slug feel to it. Fun game

I bought one of these back when it was still new. It never made much coin and although I liked to play it and it definitely has neat music, there's only a couple different enemy planes and very limited sound effects. And some of the power ups are lousy, especially "T" (what is that, Taser?)

I'd like to nominate...

Dragon Breed
Nemesis / Gradius
and another vote for Blazing Star

Does VIEWPOINT count as a side scroller?
That's one not to be missed.
For the best experience, be sure to go into
SOFT DIPS menu and change the last options from
"Alternate" to "Simultaneous" otherwise the game
is way too hard.

What does this do? I'll have to try it.

Carrier Air Wing
U.N. Squadron
Blazing Star
In the Hunt (until the later levels when the board slows down because it can't handle all the explosions on the screen)

I'm spacing on a 5th one (it's been way too long since I played R-type/Lifeforce/etc to remember if I really like them)

I'm sure there are more, but right now I'm only coming up with vertical scrollers

It was intended to determine how a 2 Player game was handled -- factory setting forces players to alternate turns. Simultaneous lets them play together. But more importantly, on the default setting, when you die, you restart that section (ala Sky Shark, etc). Some of the stage-end bosses are very hard to beat, take a while to kill, and if you die... well... it becomes a big turn off quickly. In the Simultaneous mode, a death just forces you to re-spawn another ship without a loss of progress. I bought this cart for $500 when it was new because I liked it, but when I found this setting, I out-earned most other operators of this title.

That's great, don't like the spawn points. You don't happen to know if Last Resort also has this option?

side scrolling shooter

I'm a Contra fan. Yes it can be beaten rather quickly but its a fun partners game. Most of the game is side scrolling with a couple of short vertical areas. Wasn't really a fan of the sequels but that one ate many a quarter from my pockets.

I've always had an affair with shooters. Here's a couple more modern ones I like:

-Darius (pick one). Examples: Darius Gaiden, G Darius, Darius Burst.
-Gradius (pick one) I'm a big fan of Gradius V myself.
-Thunder Force (pick one) I grew up on the series on the Genesis. Would like to pick up Thunder Force V!
-Someone before mentioned Choplifter. Awesome!
-I would consider Metal Slug to be in this category, but it does have platforming and vertical scrolling.

Way too many to name.

It's we're talking shmups in general, not just ones with aircrafts/spaceships/jetpacks, then I'd have to revise my list and replace R-type with Metal Slug X. :)
