Many have nostalgic value, others not so much, all are pretty boring on freeplay after the first run through. :)

Just to flood the general discussion with more side scroller nonsense (Thanks Tighe), how about we all share our personal Top 5 JAMMA side scrollers. Yes, I know there are like 100s of them, but you can only pick 5 from any genre.

Here are mine in no particular order. I'd say nostalgia was a big factor in my selections, not necessarily "best game." I'm sure after hearing from some of you, I'll have second thoughts. For instance, I think games like DD:SoM, Turtles in Time and Ghouls 'n Ghosts would definitely be in a Top 10 list for me.

1. Willow. Loved the movie, the soundtrack kicks ass, the game actually follows the movie timeline, the graphics are cool, the RPG element adds a bit more. Great game.

2. Double Dragon. Probably one of the first arcade games I ever played as a kid. I remember playing this with my older brother a lot. This one most would consider THE classic side scrolling beat'em up.

3. Final Fight. Took the DD concept and made it 10X better. I also remember playing this a lot as a kid with my brother. We spent a summer in Korea and beat it multiple times at the arcades there.

4. Golden Axe: RoDA. Great 4P dungeon crawler. Awesome character and level design. This sequel definitely took Golden Axe to a different level.

5. Rastan. Another classic side scroller I played a lot. The whole fantasy/conan theme with the dramatic music made it appealing to me I guess.

1.)Double Dragon

2.)Shinobi

3.)Final Fight

4.)TMNT

5.)Rastan

Those are the first that came to my head. Probably because of nostalgia. I'm sure there are more.

Yeah, this genre has lost it's luster since my youth. Not much replay value to be honest. Many great memories as a little kid though. In no particular order:

1. X-Men- seeing the 6 player cabinet at the mall as a 9 yr old, it's a miracle my head didn't explode after being overwhelmed by the sheer awesomeness.

2. TMNT- played this with my cousins at the arcades in Atlantic City (when they still existed)... Good times

3. Golden Axe:RoDA- actually wrote a review of this for my school "paper" when I was in like 4th or 5th grade haha. I can actually remember first playing it at Sportsworld in Paramus, NJ....this game also blew my young mind

4. Simpsons- it's the Simpsons, what's not to love?

5. The Punisher - played this on the genesis and is the current marquee in my MAME cabinet

Honorable mentions: King of the Dragons, D&D series- played KotD on the SNES and waited and waited for the D&D collection be released on the PS1 ( alas it was never to be)

Hmmm, I can list five but I don't think I want to number them since they are all special to me...

Ninja Gaiden - Played it at the local 7-11, I thought it was awesome and I was absolutely heartbroken when I played the NES version.

Willow - Played at the same 7-11. It was amazing for a game of this era and sucked many a quarter from me.

D&D Tower of Doom - I first played this at a FEC. It was the first game I ever saw in a Showcase cabinet and absolutely blew my mind.

X-Men - I played this in a 6 player cab at a local Putt-Putt. Amazing gameplay, the fact that you could actually attack opponents while they were on the ground was something that I always felt side-scrollers lacked. X-men was the total package.

The Punisher - I really have no idea why this game holds such strong memories but it does. Nick Fury always struck a chord with me, so maybe that is it.

1. TMNT - loved everthing TMNT including this. Used to play this non stop at the local skating ring.

2. Simpsons - was right next to TMNT at the skating ring.

3. X-Men - never watched the cartoon or read the comics but always played this at the local arcade since it had the same feel as TMNT but with special powers.

4. Knights Of The Round - caught my attention because as you progress, your character upgrades based on how many points you get.

5. Final Fight - Always chose Haggar, spent many quaters playing, never saved Jessica :(

D&D Shadows of Mystara - Quarter sucker for sure but it's pure awesomeness.

Golden Axe RODA - an awesome yet well balanced game. I would dare say that it's too easy.

Magic Sword - the sprites were a little small but then again you got to each have an NPC to assist you. The secrets and find details of this game made it quite awesome and made for nice repeat play.

Metal Slug - yeah I know lots of games listed were K&P or Dungeon Crawlers but 7 versions later it's still PURE AWESOMENESS.

Cadash - LINKED 2 MACHINE PLAY. I need not say more.

Black Tiger tops my list. The rest are in a random order as I thought of them.

Black Tiger
Magic Sword
D&D Shadow Over Mystara
Final Fight
D&D Tower of Doom

Ninja Gaiden
Ghosts N Goblins
Final Fight (Pretty damn fun)
Contra
The Ninja Warriors (3 screens)
TMNT

I have a lot of fine memories of all of these.
