I have a chance to pick up a lethal enforcers for 200 bucks. Right gun doesn't work and the sound doesn't work evidently.

Is it worth 200?

So thing I've learned about these browsing these forums with the sound issues is it's typically an issue with the Konami 054986A audio module, guess the caps leak and ruin the small board. Folks came up with a replacement module but you gotta swap the ASIC/DAC over from the old one. Something to consider if you pickup the game. No idea on the gun tracking, could be a board issue or just cleaning up the gun lens itself. You'd have to swap guns to test.

If it's a game you want I don't think 200 is bad, especially if it's got a nice cab and/or monitor, but just know you might be going down a diff path fixing both of those issues.

Thank you so much for the nice follow-up. That's really a lot of good information. I managed to pick it up for 160, so I don't think I'm going to be out that much. The cabinet is in really good condition considering its age with only some damage at the very bottom. The gentleman I purchased it from was going out to the movies with his family, so I quickly purchased it and then I will pick it up tomorrow. Pics to come.

For under $200, I don't think you did bad at all. The repairs don't seem too daunting. Have fun with it.

160 is even a better deal, plus it'll be a fun project to get working again. There are kits available for fixing that sound issue if it is the Konami board, that'll be a fun soldering project. Please do share pics, I'd like to see it.

Do you think citrus strip will strip off that lacquer? That's what I'm going to try first since it seems to be about the most gentle thing I can find. I'm not too worried about the traces either since I have a whole roll of wire wrap and should be able to patch anything that's been burnt off. I'm hoping to not have to pull it.

I used 99% Isopropyl and probably some Goof Off with Q-Tips. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if your citrus strip is the real thick kind I'd be worried it would make everything unpleasantly sticky.

Once I had enough of it off to see all the caps, I desoldered them and cleaned up the rest of the board. I referred to the schematic picture I found online and metered out each trace from the pin to the solder pad. There were a ton of dead traces I had to jump.

You can see my result below. I know it looks awful. This was quite awhile ago and I later cleaned it up. I wanted to be sure it worked before I went and got the surface mount caps.

Thanks for your information, this community makes things so much easier!

Next question out there is one of the guns doesn't work. I suspect it's just a sensor, so if that's the case, are there any sources for those?

Does the machine have the original revolver style guns or are they Happ 45 guns? Parts for the Happ guns would be much easier to find.

It depends what "doesn't work" means.

With my happ guns 2 of them didn't work for different reasons. One of them nothing happened at all when you fired the gun. No sound or flash nothing. I opened it up and the harness wasn't plugged in inside the gun. I plugged it in and it was fine.

The other gun flashed the screen but nothing registered. I opened that one up and one of the 2 pins connecting the sensor had cracked off at the solder joint. So I soldered that back on and it worked fine.

I've never messed with the LE guns though so I'm not sure how those are inside.

So I snipped off all the caps with a leg cutter, and tacked on a bunch of through hole caps because that's all I got. tested everything with a multimeter and I don't see any shorts where there shouldn't be and I don't see any opens where they shouldn't be.

It's too cold to go out there and test it right now, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

If everything tests out okay and I get sound, then the plan is to reinforce everything with hot glue so the Caps can't get whacked out of place or off of trace.

I forgot to take pictures of the cab itself to share, but I will plan to do that tomorrow.

The guns are 45 replacements I think. Not sure if they are Happ or not.

I am definitely going to have to replace the edge connector because the original one has been stretched by some goomba soldering the pads to shore up a loose connector.

I guess I shouldn't say anything since my repair is essentially a hack also, but I'm not a fan of fixing edge connectors that way.

Thanks again everyone for your input.

Well, it never got warm enough for me to drag my temperature sensitive bones into the garage today, so hopefully tomorrow is better.

I did try it yesterday before putting the tiny cap on the end of the picture, and it still didn't have any sound, so I'm not feeling overly optimistic about the situation.

I replaced all other caps on the board since that picture too, but all of them tested good in the end. That being said my tester is pretty chintzy, and there was a fair amount of hum, so perhaps there's some quality my tester is missing that in the real world comes out.

If I still get no sound, should I just go ahead and replace the LA4705 chip, or is there something else I should check first?

The chips themselves seem fairly inexpensive on eBay so that will be my next stop if I get no sound.

So here's the cab, warts and all,. Pretty good though for being 28 years old.

A previous operator did some minor repairs to the bottom and spray painted it to blend into the rest of the graphic.

Since it's already damaged down there by spray paint, I will likely finish the job and Bondo up the bottom and blend it into the rest of the spray paint.

I think I'm going to keep it more or less a survivor instead of fully restoring it.

Unfortunately the sound did not come back by recapping it, so I suspect the amplifier chip is dead. The red gun on the monitor is totally gone. I'm going to try and blast it with the rejuvenator, but if that doesn't work as you can see I have a television that's going to be lending some stuff.

I have to take a bunch of solder off the jamma connector and replace the one that's on there because it's now all stretched out.

Then there's the gun thing. Probably going to just open it up and see if it got disconnected. There's no flash when you pull the trigger, so it must be a board, a connection, or a bad switch.
