Hi-

Just bought a Leland Ironman Super Off Road 2-player cabaret. It's the 1p steering that isn't working. Upon further inspection, the small gear isn't being engaged by the bigger white gear. The small gear is hard to see in the attached picture, but it's turned by the bigger white gear.

Interested in suggestions. Finding entire wheel assemblies has proven impossible (for used) and expensive/uncertain (for new), even after visiting Ebay, ArcadeFixIt, Arcade Bone Yard, Arcade Shop, and Coin-Op parts.

It's also my understanding that the 3p version uses different parts for the steering assembly than the 2p version, so perhaps they are not interchangeable. I wonder if I should try to find/fabricate this smaller plastic gear? Or if anyone knows of a scavenged 2p steering assembly available for sale, let me know.

THANK YOU!
Matt

Is the smaller gear stripped? If not maybe you can make a minor adjustment so it engages? Shouldn't be too difficult to look at the good one and figure out exactly why that one isn't working.

From what I can see the smaller gear seems like all the teeth are there. It's almost like it's not pushing hard enough against the bigger plastic gear to stay engaged.

Fixed!

For posterity I thought I'd post the fix to the steering problem with my 2-player Leland Ironman Super Off Road cabaret in case anyone else runs into this. I'm guessing stripped gears inside the steering are fairly common after years of use.

The smaller gear was stripped pretty badly - I included a better view in the first picture attached to this post. It has 14 teeth but I wasn't able to really get a good measure of the diameter of the gear or the shaft (digital caliper has been purchased, but not here yet). Took everything apart (washers, nut, encoder wheel, etc) except for the bearing which I left on the shaft.

I bought a set of miscellaneous electric motor gears off ebay (brand name was Dikavs, 105 pcs) for $20 bucks or so. That set came with a bunch of 14T gears of various shapes and sizes and I was able to find a couple of workable options (right number of teeth, right diameter), but none that the shaft would accept - they were all either too big or too small. So I bored out the shaft of one of the new gears with a 3/32 drill bit to make it large enough. None of the gears were the same height as the old gear, so I also added a spacer that came with the kit to the shaft so the new gear would line up with the old one. A few taps of the hammer and the new gear was installed.

All put back together (second picture) and it works perfectly. You can see the new blue gear installed in this picture. The two player Leland Ironman Super Off Road has different steering components than the three player. This fix is only applicable to the 2-player cabaret.

Happy this worked out and I didn't have to spend $200 on a wheel! If anyone has one of these and is looking to fix steering problems, I think the components are simple enough you can save money and skip buying a new wheel in at least some cases.

Matt
