Screw all that Gamecube/Windwaker HD talk, they are remaking this game entirely for Wii U.

Pretty cool, but honestly, I'm tired of all the remakes. I'm more interested in the NEW Zelda games for Wii U and 3DS.

The Wii U Direct they did talked about this, and I think it's cool.

They said that the next new Zelda is going to take a while, so here's an upgrade to hold you over. Not a bad practice, I think. Zelda is pretty much a one or two per generation, so I would expect it to be another 3-4 years before we really see the next. I wouldn't mind a hold over.

They said they are still too early in development for the next Zelda to really show it off.

Yeah, I get that. I mean, I don't mind these remakes as these games are all pretty awesome, just wish they could kick out the next ones sooner. Though, the jump from TP to SS wasn't TOO long. And they have two brand new games to release next so I understand the hold up. I'm guessing late 2014-early 2015 release for both and that's being optimistic I guess.

New year new remake.

Windwaker received a lot of criticism when it came out (some of it justified).

Personally I found it boring. The sailing portions were especially tedious and not nearly as satisfying as the horse in Ocarina.

I enjoyed WW a lot for whatever reason, though I had to come back to it like 3 times before I finally played it all the way through. I don't know that I care about this, though.

I liked when they had all the GB Zelda games coming out, so if there wasn't a new major console Zelda game to play, there was probably still a handheld one you hadn't finished yet.

I'll agree with the sailing bits. The world was amazingly small in terms of land, and all the traveling by sea got old after a while.

However, the main reason I never finished Ocarina is because I fucked up and missed my chance at getting the horse. Trust me, running EVERYWHERE on foot all the time in Ocarina was much worse then sailing everywhere in Windwaker. Everything was flat brown and running was slooooow... :p

After you beat the Forest Temple, you can go back in time and go back to Lon Lon Ranch and learn the song.

I figured there'd be a way to, but when I researched it at the time, all I could find was basically "you're fucked." I never researched it later since I really didn't care anymore :p

I've tried picking it up a few more times since then and starting over, but I can't get passed the shitty graphics. Even on the 3DS remake, I just can't do it. I've got the HD filter on my PC so I might try playing it there sometime just to see if that helps me get passed the shitty visuals.

Maybe I'm just looking back all jaded or something but I enjoyed a lot of the sailing. Sure there wasn't a whole lot of land mass, but the exploration was awesome. I really enjoyed bringing up treasure, and going to every different island.

I started to go through it again some time in 2010 or 2011, but only got as far as the Tower of the Gods. I forget what happened, it may have been Fallout New Vegas.

Either way, I'll pick this up and go through it. My wife loves watching me play Zelda, and she hasn't seen this one all the way through yet.

WOW, filling the gap with more shovelware remakes. They are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one as it is probably the worst Zelda game made.

Wha? I liked Wind Waker. I'll admit freely that I was one of the "HAHA CEL-DA" detractors, but once I played it I found it enjoyable. I liked Twilight Princess (GC, not Wii version) better but Waker wasn't too bad.

I wont buy the remake tho, since I won't buy a WiiU. Maybe if they make a WiiU emulator like DolphinU or something, I'll check it out.

I wasn't bothered by the Cell Shading, it was that the game was long and boring.

TP, was OK, but again too long. I actually stopped playing it because it was too boring. I stopped at Hyrule Castle, which I guess is pretty much the end of the game.

Here is my ranking of top Zelda games

  1. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
  2. Link's Awaking (GB) also DX version
  3. Link to the Past (SNES)
  4. Ocarina of Time
  5. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  6. Majora's Mask
  7. Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages
  8. Phantom Hourglass
  9. Skyward Sword
  10. Four Swords Adventures
  11. Twilight Princess
  12. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords
  13. The Wind Waker
  14. Zelda's Adventure
  15. Link: The Faces of Evil
  16. Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

Games I haven't played:
  • Spirit Tracks
  • Minish Cap

Definitely agree with your first 4. I haven't played many of the portable versions, but I did play Minish Cap and it was pretty good. Had a very Link to the Past feel to it. I stopped playing Skyward Sword when it became a "Go get me the 356 items I lost IN ORDER OR YOU START OVER" game. I think it was when the forest was flooded. So annoying. And it only had like 3 different areas to visit. That sucked.

Now I want to play Link to the Past again..

I am pulling out my GB and Link's Awaking this weekend now!

Link to the Past is my favorite.

I'm down to four from the series I have not beaten.

Majora's Mask
Spirit Tracks
Oracle of Ages
Zelda II

I have played all, but not beaten those.

I'm kind of waiting for a 3DS Majora's Mask, as I heard rumor of it... but no talk since, so I may just end up booting it on the original hardware.

Oracle of Ages got to a point and got stuck, and by the time I got back to it I had forgotten the rest. Same with Minish Cap, but I restarted it and beat it.

QFT!

That was the last console Zelda I tried to play. Running in Ocarina killed that series for me.

I did try to pick up and play Spirit Tracks on DS, but the f'n flute/music bit was next to impossible with my color blindness, so I quit that one too.

Screw you Zelda series.

I get people's issues with WW, but I too enjoyed playing it back then and still now. Yeah, there's slow parts, I think the same could be said about Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.

Though, I can't believe you haven't played Minish Cap. It was developed by Capcom and done really well. For nostalgia, Link's Awakening will always be my favorite handheld version, but as far as graphics/gameplay, Minish Cap gets my vote.

My Top 5:

1. Legend of Zelda
2. Link to the Past
3. Link's Awakening/Minish Cap (Not sure if it's fair to compare handheld versions with notable console versions so I included both)
4. Ocarina of Time
5. Twilight Princess

Minish Cap was pretty great, though that's another one I never got to finish. I love the GBA as a system though - some REALLY great games on that handheld, especially good classic style RPGs with modern RPG elements (Golden Sun, anyone?)

Golden Sun was awesome! So was Advance Wars, FF Tactics Advance, Fire Emblem, Warioware Inc., the list goes on.

The GBA SP is still one of the greatest handhelds ever. It was actually portable (fits right in your pocket) and had so many good games. I spent A LOT of hours playing mine. I still need to pick up the Classic NES version. They usually go for about $90 on eBay.
