Found these at walmart, they are direct replacements for the fluorescent bulbs. Theres no cutting out the ballast, starter ect. Just plug em right in. They look AMAZING! Really makes the colors pop! Ill be replacing all of my old bulbs with these. heres a pic of them in my joust and ms pac. The pic doesn't do it justice, it looks even better in person. they cost like $6.88 each

Very nice, how much?

EDIT: I have a few options, all require cutting and I haven't gotten around to em given I have much more pressing matters with games not working. If I have a failed ballast would that still interfere?

That's a great price, I was buying 18" fixtures from Amazon for 2/$15
but this is better and I can get them locally.

Better buy more than one. The first one I bought at the Walmart store was dead right out of the package.

I think there's another thread about this type of led tube. It seems great, but my question is does it truly bypass the ballast, or is it compatible with the ballast? If it's compatible, then I think the ballast is still being used in the assembly. Maybe it's possible to do either—simple plug and play or rewire the connections for line voltage only.

The one I've been using, made by Keystone Technologies and sold at Lightup.com, is a little pricier but it truly does bypass the ballast/starter and requires some simple rewiring.

Keystone has a good page that explains the differences in their products. They do sell a few SmartDrive products, but none are the 18" tube.

Unless you cut the ballast and starter out, the led would be using them. I wouldn't mind converting to led like OP as it leaves the things in incase someone is looking to be 100% original. But everyone has their own idea of what is best.

The idea is the LED lasts a lot longer and provided better effect backlight....so no reason to pull out the entire assembly or rewire..just put in better light...if someone wants to go back to the fluorescent bulb they simply pull it out.

True, but you are still using high amp/volt to run a ballast and starter, where the LED inherently only would require ~12v. So leaving in the old still uses "lots" of power. However not sure that many people here care?

Wouldn't a kill-a-watt test show the difference?

Pretty sure I have a dead ballast or starter in my DK Jr. Would this bulb work if just dropped it in and left the dead ballast/starter as well? I assume not, but some of these posts make me question it.
