So, I had a Solar Fox machine for a long time with a 48-in-1 in it. The stick was a 4-way leaf but it seemed to work beautifully with both the 4 way games like Jr. Pac-Man and the 8-Way games like 1943. I know there is a difference but why would it have worked so well?

With a micro-switched joystick, it's either on or off so it would just NOT work in 1943 if it was a 4 way stick.

Anyone have any insight into this? Are 4-way leaf sticks capable of 8 way movement in a Jamma setup?

Depends on your stick on the exact reason why, but even some 4 way microswitch joys could hit 8 directions if the restrictor is worn enough.

the leafs must have been bent in enough that both leafs were getting actuated in the area half-way between the diamond shape restrictor points

i have a midway pacman joystick that i intentionally moved the leafs in a bit so it can play frenzy/etc. from a multi-game. works great for 4 way, too.

nice little trick.

This makes the most sense. I bet the guy that set it up for me (I didn't do this machine) adjusted the leafs a bit. I think this provides the most authentic feel to the 8 way games too. Hmmmmmm.

Now what to do... go 8 way leaf since it's a 1943 or a modded 4-way...
