Just capped my mario brothers monitor. It was faded and didn't want to sync immediately.

Two things - C201 was installed backwards. I double checked against the mark on the board and the Cap map.

After the capkit it seems to jump and not have a solid signal. I guess I should put it in my Popeye and see if does any better there.

Other than C201 being in backwards before I started, nothing else looked bad (no lifted pads, no obvious trace problems).

B+ is parked on 108v and is solid. After the cap kit it was 108.7 and I adjusted it down.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I'd start with the horizontal hold pot. It could be bad, but I bet it's just dirty. With the monitor off, twist it back and forth a few times. Reapply power, and adjust as needed.

Will give it a try Ed - thanks. I was just confused (easy, I know) because it wasn't doing it before the capkit.

Okay, did that (twisted back and forth) - turned it on and the same. Hit it with some contact cleaner, turned it on, the same (each time had to adjust to get a picture of course).

How do I check to see if its bad (HHOLD pot) ? I do get changes when I adjust and it (mostly) seems to hold a picture except for what you see in the video.

Thanks again.

Just to eliminate some variables, I moved it to a different cabinet and had the same results. So its probably not PS and probably not game board.

If no one thinks its a bad fly then I'll pull the chassis (ug) and check for bad solder, bridged solder, etc. I really thought this one was a much smoother cap job than any of the others so I wasn't real worried. Oh well.

It's not the flyback.....the video looks like horizontal tearing. It sounds like the horizontal hold pot is fine.

So, it wasn't doing this before the cap kit? Makes me think something got messed up during the cap kit. Make sure the horizontal center pot didn't get cracked, or any wires broken at the remote board.

There were HHOLD problems, but it would warm up and sync shortly after power up. That and some colors were faded, so I cap'd it. It wasn't doing this "zapping" and jumping around like it is now.

I'll pull the chassis this week and see if anything got munged.

How DO people cap chassis without damaging other components? Can't exactly lay them on the table.

Thanks again.

Did you power up the monitor with the cap installed backwards, or did you correct it prior to the power up? If you powered it up with the cap backwards, then suspect the cap is no good and replace it. Might just fix the issue, if it was indeed powered up with the cap in backwards.

If the monitor was working before the capkit, i would suspect that cap was not backward... it's possible that the error was in the schematic and/or serigraph, if there's one on that monitor

It came to me 15+ years ago with that cap in backwards.

The BR map shows it the same as the board shows it, so I'm pretty sure it was in there wrong.

Not sure, I guess I'll just take a picture of that spot and see what everyone thinks.

Wow, 6 months later

User error.

I don't know how I missed it twice, but I had a cap that I failed to cut the legs off post-install. It must have been shorting against something nearby. :(

Anyway, pulled it out again and the light caught it "just right" and I was like "what are THOSE doing there". Snipped, double checked the one capacitor that I thought might have had a solder blob onto another trace (no), re-installed and looking great.

Finally.

Sometimes, I guess, its good for "real life" to get in the way so that we can find these dumb things.

Another "don't forget...." to add to the post-capkit list for me.

Sorry for digging up this old thread.

Yep, been there. Now, the last thing I do after a cap kit......run the palm of my hand across the entire bottom of the chassis. You'll never miss a straggler again.

Exactly, Ed! Thanks for the pointers before - sorry it was a brain lapse
