Latest acquisition - Quantum project

Good way of looking at it Bill but why after spending alot of time and money to clean up/refresh all the parts would you put all that nice stuff in a shitty converted cabinet? Building or restoring one of these is going to be out of the park expensive(ask me, i know) and the last thing i'd want to look forward to after cleaning up all that mess is spending another 50 hours on a converted cabinet that i just spent $1000 on. The return on this type of project comes down to the quality of the restoration, there will be people that will only accept a true original and pay a high premium and there will be plenty of others that that will pay a premium for the attention to detail in a well documented restoration even if the cabinet is a repro. I'll go on record and say that i have sold several games and have legitimate offers on some of my current games that are well beyond any figures i've ever seen mentioned here. Attention to detail and lots of pictures will get the return you're looking for should you ever decide to sell. You won't get it here though!

Reproduction art is decent at best. Quite often its worse.. Even with the original films, the color matching can still be off.. So you can pay all the attention to detail, but if the repro parts are not up to par..

There are a few decent converted qantums out there. The one I sold was pretty good. I think there are 2 or 3 in LA area. Probably a few more.

Here is the pic of my cab. 2 hours of transfering all wiring is alot easier than the 30 to 40 hours to build it from scratch..

Here's some pics of the Quantum i'm saving. It's rough, it has both sides by the control panel broke, bottom left front corner is missing, and it's got bad water damage. the square that's cut out, was sent to be the color match sample for the reproduction artwork. I'm looking at 40 + hours to save this cabinet, Vs 10 - 12 hours for a completely new reproduction.

Can you explain why you believe it's worth putting that much time into a cabinet with water damage? I'm not saying it's not, but interested in your opinion, especially since you're the one making the reproductions.

What is your method for fixing the swollen panels? Just sand, sand away and seal it?

With my swollen cabinet, I don't believe there's any way that the cabinet can be saved. The swelling doesn't just go outward, but the inner panels too. Also, with the moisture damage, the particle board isn't just swollen, but with the expansion, it loses strength and the bond that holds the particles together is weakened.

I would most likely buy one of your reproduction cabinets, if you could get one down to north Alabama!

the only reason i am attempting to save this one, is at the customers request. If it were mine, i'd not even try it lol. Once i strip the art, i'm going to carefully take it all apart, sand all the swell out of it, then i'm going to soak all the bad areas and T molding slot with wood hardener. I plan on filling in the T-slot with bondo and recutting it too. Skim coat of bondo over all the wood hardened areas tool. Panels will get black vinyl, insides of the game sides as well, then reassemble the thing.

It's way more work than i would do to something of mine. The second quantum is really bad. The game sides measure 1.125 inches wide in the back, and the swell extends 3" deep!!

I sure hope you quoted high!!!

no, has to retain all original panels. I have already replaced the really bad cabinet, dropped a new one off this past saturday, this one has to survive intact!

I can see the desire to the keep the original panels, but I'd be concerned about how that swelling messes up the integrity/strength of the particle board. I'm sure it will turn out nice, after all that work.

Brett, I'm still interested in buying some of the Quantum cabinet pieces from you.
