Late christmas gift to myself....

Wow, thanks guys for all replies and tips! In fact, I've already read a lot of the posts here on KLOV about the Hakko, thus I wanted one for myself. So together with it, I ordered some extra tips; one 0.8mm and one 1.6 mm (inside diameter). Plus 10 extra filters. Unfortunately the pre-filter was sold out. And as Andy says, I will try to locate some ceramic fiber cloths; saw they are used in wood stoves. Will get myself some drills as well.

FYI

2mm ceramic fiber paper, I use two of these stacked as filter

4mm ceramic fiber paper, you can use one of those as a filter

I use a hollow punch set, 3/4" diameter cut, works great.

You will never have to buy Hakko's filters again (especially their new design that does not work well).

p

That burning lead smell is pretty good though. I figure it's better to build up a tolerance. Works for asbestos I believe as well.
Don't joke about crap like that. Some people may believe it instead of seeing the humor.

After all, we have people who believe Trump won, and vaccines are a conspiracy. Just saying (not trying to take this thread in that direction)

Thanks! I will check with the local shops who sell wood stoves to see what they have!

I'd say the concern over those things is a tad overblown. The hazmat suits they pull out if there's like 5 PPM of asbestos in the air is pretty ridiculous IMO. For the amount of soldering I do I'm not all that concerned.

The problem is that the small asbestos fibers never leave your lungs. They stay there causing more and more scaring and they poke around.

Lead is a totally different (but still dangerous) animal.

No, your lungs can expel them. The people that tended to develop mesothelioma were working in clouds of it. Asbestos occurs in nature in trace amounts. Yeah avoid it if you can but I don't freak out about trace amounts of either. The human body is designed to expel stuff thankfully.

A lot of sugar is bigger concern IMO. Smoking horrible as well. No amount of booze is healthy.

Nice, its a must have in my opinion.

Get yourself one of these little drill bit holders, makes cleaning out a clogged tip easy.

Also get your self a set of filter discs, keeping those fresh is key to keeping it working well. The flux smoke will plug them quickly.
That's cool. Where did you buy it?
Even a small fan to keep the smoke out of your face is fine as long as you're not in a closet. I also have a 6" cubic area sized fan and I tend to use it most because it's easier to take out for quick jobs. I use the booth thing if i'm doing a cap kit, etc.
Ok... I bought a small USB fan I can plug into my small desktop pc on my work bench

I'm sorry, but you are mistaken.

Inhalation of asbestos fibers leads to accumulation of the fibers in lung tissue. The immune system recognizes asbestos fibers as foreign invaders and sends macrophages, which are a type of white blood cell, to surround the fiber to break it down and remove it from the body. This works for some fibers, but the body cannot remove all inhaled fibers.
