Question of the day: Should participation in the "Last Call" thread be mandatory? That is, should someone offer to the members and wait 2 weeks before parting out a machine?

See:

EXPERIMENT: Last Call Thread Mandatory For Planned Part-Outs June 15 to July 31.
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=188385

At the time, there was people that said this was great, and other people that said it wasn't going to make any difference.

I'm included to make it mandatory. Impact on people seems to be minimal, and there have been some cabinets that have been saved due to those threads (I've got PM from people on both sides of a transaction about same).

Inclination isn't the same thing as a decision though, so if anyone has any strong opinions on same, it's a very good time to express them.

You will probably just end up with more sellers parting games out immediately or posting the parts for sale outside a part out post.

No, there are too many tire-kickers and folks that don't follow through. I've had games for sale where I've had multiple buyers flake on pickup times or just not follow through on communication.

I'm all for terms of what you can post on KLOV. But telling a seller how they must sell an item is over the line IMHO. It's their game, they can sell, part, or crush if they like.

So... You're basically going to dictate what people can and can not do with their property? What would the repercussions be of somebody parting out a cabinet without first offering it in whole in this mandatory last call thread?

Yes - please make this a rule - I will make it a point if I ever sell a game to part it out and crush the cabinet.

J/K, but with the previous post it's a bit much. I don't know how you can make someone hold out on something they own. I understand where you're coming from, and it would be nice if people could wait. It just gets to be a bit much when people don't show up, or just lowball you to death on a complete game.

Actually NO. We can still do what we want with our property, he is just controlling how we get ride of our stuff using HIS web site. You can always chose not to sell stuff here.

A custom tag under your name saying you're a "Stripper" and total loss of respect from some guy 400 miles away who could have picked the game up in a month. LOLLOLOL

edit: or you could custom tag people "Game Rapers" that would be funny as hell!!

Either way, I belong to a local group of arcade collectors. If I've already tried selling a cabinet whole and if there's no interest locally, why would I want to wait two weeks to part it out to sell it off nationally? Besides, the only thing that this will do is get a whole bunch of people messaging you asking for specific pieces when you do part it out. It's just wasting everybody's time making them wait two weeks.

I'm OK with it, but there has to be a loophole for exceptions. If someone has a compressed timeline (think: divorce, foreclosure, etc) and can't afford to wait 2 weeks to sell off parts, I think they should be allowed to plea for an immediate sell off.

Also, if you're saving money to buy a convertible, you should be able to part your games immediately with no questions asked.

*wink*

I can understand the idea behind this, to prevent cabinets from getting torn apart when they could have otherwise remained intact. However, if someone wants to part out a cabinet, they're going to part it out. They can post it for two weeks with an obscene price, or just take offers and not accept any of them. They may just end up selling the parts elsewhere, which only hurts the community as a whole, as those parts would have otherwise been available to the members here.

Also, consider this - if someone is going to part out their cabinet, that could result in a handful of other cabinets then being complete. That one person missing a marquee, a proper CP, boards, glass, etc etc. Is it better to have one more "project" cab out there, versus some existing projects being able to be completed?

food for thought.

Most people who try to sell a game will usually give it a week or so to sell before going with the part-out option. Those who think a cabinet isn't salvageable may buy it for one specific part (a monitor) then part out the rest rather than try to sell the remaining POS. I don't think these people would normally need a 2-week requirement, because mos of them tried to sell the game locally for several weeks before coming here offering parts that are easier to ship than an entire cabinet. Anyone close enough to buy the whole thing most likely already saw it on Craigslist.

Now, the people who come here talking about the game they just bought and are already talking about parting it out - I have no problem with smacking those people around....
