I'm visiting Los Angeles next week and am wondering if you guys have any recommendations for places to play. I am possibly going to Playland Arcade at the Santa Monica pier and Pins and Needles. What other places have more than a couple of games?

As I've said in other people's posts about this, if you are coming to LA there are lot of other things to see and do besides arcade games.

But if you are definitely set on arcade games you might be better served by seeing some of the private collections people have put together. There are not a lot of arcades here anymore, particularly those with classic games. The playland arcade at Santa Monica pier is mostly a dump and a lot of the games are in really crappy shape, particularly the pinball machines. Speaking of that here is the web site for Pins and Needles:

I'd check the hours before going there, as they seem to change constantly. Other than the Tron Legacy the pin selection is not too exciting in my opinion.

I will second blipsy barcade, they have a lot of good classic selections. Still haven't tried pins and needles though I hear its good if you can catch them when they're open.

I was recently at Universal Citywalk the other day and they have a decent arcade towards the back with some modern day and classic games (some CPS2 games, mr driller, a real donkey kong cabinet). Was stuck on the DK cabinet for an hour or so, and had to go soon after, didn't get as much time as I'd have liked to look around, but if you're in the area...

Blipsy Barcade is pretty cool and close to where I live...but make no mistakes - it's a dive bar in an okay neighborhood.

Blipsy's has whiskey and beer, plus video games and pinball. Mighty fun!

I'm originally from Santa Monica, CA. The pier is kinda sad. There games are falling apart from 30+ years of abuse. back in the day when I was a kid (80's), they had a Chiller gun game... never saw one again.... there's always the arcade in disneyland. if In Santa Monica, go to The house of Billards on 19th and Wilshire Blvd. They have pinballs and some arcade games. Parking in back.

Also Bayshore bowl (bowling ally) on Pico and 4th/3erd street has a gameroom... but since I haven't been there in 5 years, I have no clue what they got.

Here is a pic of the classic line up from Playland on the pier. Beat ups, but playable.
