About a year ago I acquired a working but very washed out monitor that has JC-TRON screen printed on it. It came with an imperial monitor manual, and others have helped me determine it's a re-branded Kortek, something very similar to model KT-1420A, just a few components out of place.

In typical fashion I put on a cap kit and replaced the filter cap, plugged it in and it was still a little dim so I adjusted the screen control on the flyback and had a beautiful picture...for about 15 seconds. Something near the flyback smoked but I didn't see what. I pulled the chassis, realized that I put a could capacitors in wrong. Yeah, let the snickering begin. Anyway, after I fixed that issue I installed it and turned it on just to humor myself. It's now totally dead.

It's been sitting there ever since but I need to get a width coil for another chassis so I figure now would be the time to troubleshoot this one. I don't have a ring tester to check the flyback. I'm happy to rip this thing up and test every component given a little instruction. Where to start?

Didn't realize that. I haven't installed new ones yet. I don't really remember which ones were backward, I think there were two or maybe three. I guess I'll just replace the one's I have in stock here, or I can try to check them with my ohmmeter I guess.

Went through Ken's repair tips and replaced two resistors. One was just a tad off but I had a replacement here. The other was dead. I re-soldered a few components, replaced a fuse just for fun and brought the monitor back to life. It was a little blurry, so after about 2 minutes I was getting ready to adjust the focus on the flyback and the screen went black again.

Now I'm back to a dead monitor.

I'll pull the chassis and check the one dead resistor I found earlier and report back.
