I needed a replacement monitor for my Sega Outrun.

Arcadeshop only had Kortek 19" CGA, CRT monitors in stock for $199
Shipping was $47, took a week to arrive.

Installation was basically plug and play.

My impression when done??
GREAT!

I highly recommend this monitor if you need an affordable CGA monitor
and do not want to go with an LCD.

Anyone else using these?

I happened to bump into one through a fellow Dutch collector and bought it for a great price.
I wish he had more of them...finding NOS/new CRT monitors here is even harder then finding original cabs.
It's still in the box though......can't choose which cab will get this ;)

are they decent quality? i know the vision pro weren't the best monitors, but i've been hesitant to consider buying a new monitor since the vision pros have mostly dried up.

i know the vision pro weren't the best monitors

The VP's are solid monitors and have a great picture. In my own opinion they looked every bit as good as any other monitor. The longevity factor ... well. ..... only time will tell that tale. The same as using a Wei-ya or Jen Shinn chassis .... to early to tell how long they'll last.

Korteks have mixed reputations; some people have great luck with them and others terrible. i'm not sure that Kortek actually builds their monitors (Imperial sold Korteks under their own name, and Betson might have as well) and that may explain why some are fine and others not.

Every VisionPro I've installed has looked frickin' fantastic. I really wish they were still available.

The only other brand of replacement monitor I've ever bought was a Betson, and it was just okay.

I just got a Kortek for my Spy Hunter because I could never get an LCD to work and for some reason it makes a very loud pitched noise when first turned on, but it goes away after about 2 minutes and has a really great picture. Has anybody heard of this loud noise?

I've tried a replacement chassis from the guy that sold it to me and I got the same loud sound, also a dark picture so there is other issues with the replacement chassis.

A guy at Betson support said that it may be the sound it's making while it's syncing, it is a bit wavy during the loud sound, and because it's not primarily built for the older games, it makes this noise. However somebody else at Betson through email told me that it may be a capacitor breaking down, but then why would it go away after about 2 minutes and work fine?

Any ideas on what's causing this sound? I've made sure that it's grounded properly too.

I can't recall, but if your sync is composite and you have it connected to both sync pins, try removing it from the vertical sync pin....

I'd try it anyway. Some of these newer monitors don't like the vertical and adjust the sync based on the horizontal...

Actually, I just tried it without connecting the video cable at all and the darn thing still makes the noise. I think these monitors are just cheap crap, but the picture does look pretty nice.

If only I could use an LCD with this game, but nobody will tell me what it takes to get the interlaced picture to show up on an LCD.

Ok, I figured it out, since I'm in England I'm giving it 220VAC, which I made sure it was rated to accept, but for some reason it just doesn't like it at first. Really weird that it's fussing about the voltage and then accepts it after a few minutes.

It's probably been explained millions of times, but what are the cons of using an LCD (if it actually worked)? The graphics would be too smoothed out?

You really need to so a search on that, it's about the deadest beat horse around ;)

To me it's simple: LCD were not around in the 80s. You don't put a modern day engine in a classic car either...

Anyway, just wanted to mention I decided to put the Kortek in my recently aquired Ms.Pac Man. The original monitor was still working, but it had HEAVY burn. I will try to replace the tube on this chassis as it's working fine still.

The Kortek looks VERY VERY good IMHO. Definitely beats every old monitor I have in my other cabs. I think the construction is not bad quality at all. The CRT is from Samsung and there's been a lot of attention on doing convergence (judging the quality on screen).

I love the remote control board on this one, it's SO much easier to set up perfectly this way.

Here's some pics, but as always it's VERY hard to get a good pic of a monitor (without flash)...

THis is actually a flash picture, so look at that brightness ! :D

In reality the picture is better than all the pics you see here.

Oh, here's the reason why I exchanged:

Look at all those convergence tabs. You could either say that the CRT tube is not that great because it needs so many, OR you can say they put in a lot of effort to get the convergence perfect. Anyway, the result is indeed very good.

I have a Kortek I just bought and I stuck it in my Tapper. Picture is beautiful but the top 1" or so of the screen has a curve and twitches a little bit.

I think it's an MCR sync issue, I don't know.

Not that happy with it right now. I might put it in my Burgertime instead.
