Is there someone having a working Konami Silent Scope 2 (ROM's marked '931') who is able to give me a dump of the M48T58 NVRAM code to resurrect my dead board ?

i think that's the same time keeper chip that's on my konami racing jam board...channelmanic is able to help out on these chips

Hi, the problem ist not the chip or writing the data.. it seems that there's no one who has the NVRAM data available to share for the Silent Scope 2... I know someone who seems to have the data but requests a lot of money for the repair which I am able to do myself but I need the NVRAM data first from a still working board...

Most likely this person spent a bit of time on this and rightfully wants compensation for it. If the data is not distributed freeware then you should respect that and buy the kit.
Thankfully most of the guys in the hobby who have the knowledge to do stuff like this openly distribute it for all to use. My suggestion would be to contact the person selling the kit and ask for the data.

I would agree if the "time spending" or investigation would be very time consuming or complicate.. but on this -would exactly take 30 seconds. Unplug the chip, dump the data which nearly every reader is able to do and save the 8 kbytes of data :) There's also no "kit". We are talking about konami repair centers who want around $150 for a "repair" which consists of writing a fresh NVRAM chip... if that's appropriate - is discussable too. But as said - there seems to be quite a number of people looking for this data to resurrect their boards and continue enjoying this great game. so if someone has a still working silent scope 2 and could help, that would be great.

Someone please drop me a line or post again if the ability to resurrect these boards becomes available, this is to large a cabinet to have taking up space and not be played :)

The problem is that the data on the chip is data that is customized for the game: Network info, region, etc... seems to be stored on the chip.

Until someone decodes the info that is to be expected on the chip, the factory will be the only place to get the repairs done.

Can a proper dump of the data not be done then ?
Why would it need to be "decoded" if all you want to do is make a copy of the data that's on it?
These are similar to the battery backed Dallas ram chips aren't they ?

I'm just asking because I'm trying to source a good one that may be dumpable and don't want to be driving myself crazy over this.

I originally thought the MAME file was usable, but was corrected on the fact that it's a modified file, not a true dump.

I have been asked to attempt a dump on the one in my SS1 to see if it is the same as the SS2. It is currently in storage, so it'll be the weekend (at least) before I can get over there....

Yeah, I was curious about that as well.
I know a fella that has SS2 running on an SS1 boardset with only the swap of 4 roms as best I know right now. He made mention of a small pcb also, but I'm trying to clarify which board exactly. So I'm not sure at the moment if the NVRAM chip was swapped somewhere in the process or not. (I'm not familiar with the board layout on these)
dark silhouette has a small little pcb board that sits on top of the main cpu board. I swapped all the roms and put that little board on and it now plays dark silhouette.
All I did was change out 4 eproms that were on one board to make it ss2. I had to leave in another 4 eproms on a second board to make ss1 work. Its kinda hard to explain, silent scope 2 will still work with the 4 eproms on the second board in place or removed. It didnt matter. silent scope 1 HAS to have them 4 and the other 4 to work.

He's too far away for me to just run over and look or grab the boards to borrow.

... but sounds good that the data of SS1 may also be valid for SS2... we'll see. I will try all dumps I will get and will also burn the SS1 program roms to check them with the NVRAM dumps I'll get from either one and let'ya know the results. My SS2 HAS the 'little board on top'. The initial rom check is fully green ('ok') but lacks the correct nvram (timekeeper) data.

maybe he's willing and able to just dump the M48T58 chip (the NVRAM) - that would already be a major step.

Let me know if you need another boardset to use for a proof of concept test once you think you have it figured out, I have 2 sitting collecting dust :)

He doesn't have the capability at the moment.
But I'll get whatever information I can from him about his boardset.

So is the NVRAM chip ... NOT ... on that "little board" ?

(guess I ought to look up a picture of the boardset so I can familiarize it's arrangement)

No, the M48T58Y NVRAM (aka "timekeeper" chip) is located on the CPU board (the first plane). it's an easy visible 1 inch by a half brick located near the filter board (and on SS2 directly placed "under" this "little board". That's what makes this guys boardset that interesting - he is able to play SS1 and SS2 without chaning the NVRAM chip - so it might be usable for both games. He might have to solution for many of us by dumping that chip. or let it have dumped by someone.
