I have a Vortek game by Global VR that has some weird issues, it smashes the immage with curves similar to a pincushion adjustment and rolls it from bottom to top.

I checked the board and found a bad capacitor which I can purchase through Digikey without a problem.

It also has a charred spot on the plastic behind the neck board where the 3 color potentiometers/resistors are at.

There is also a component which I am not sure exactly what it is that has a burnt spot on the board near the bad capacitor. (I am a newbie)

I know I will replace the cap and would like to replace the other component which I have desoldered and will attach a picture of. I would love it if someone could help me figure out what I need to order.

The last question is about the neck board components. I wasn't sure if I should even mess with that because color output on the monitor is perfect.

Thanks for any help and I love these forums!

The part in the pic is a thermister. The part number's are clearly visible in the pic so ordering a new part is fairly easy. I am not familiar with the chassis but thermisters are often used as part of the degaussing circuit.

That's helpfull.

I went to one of Randy Fromm's seminar's awhile back and will always remember how he compared fixing a monitor board to working on a car. He said if you don't know what your looking at it's kind of like a car that won't start but your replacing windshield wipers. It kind of feels like thats what I am doing here lol.

I was going to just try and replace components that look bad and see what happens since there is still a picture.

I forgot to mention there was a slight noise coming from somewhere on the board but I was hoping it might be from the cap maybe?

I found out from Digikey tech support that it is a 8ohm thermister with a diameter of 13mm. The size for this application doesn't matter much but Digikey doesn't carry anything less then 10 ohm. Would it be ok to go with one with increased resistance?

I would guess that the 10 ohm is OK but I still don't know what it does on the board so I am not certain.

Can you identify where the buzzing noise is coming from? It would not be too uncommon for the flyback or a transformer to buzz.

I was able to get it running for the past 3 months by just replacing that bad capacitor and thermister but now the screen went dead and I have no high voltage.

When inspecting the board I found a odd capacitor sized component that looks like it has shrunk down near the flyback and I wasn't sure if this was the culprit. I have no idea what it is called either.

Any suggestions?

That's an inductor (a coil). It is perfectly normal for the shrink tubing applied to it to shrink down like that.

ok. I appreciate your fast reply.

I was curious if you would recommend sending this chassis and the other one I posted that has a fried resistor to the Monitor Boss?

I have sent out boards for repair to various game distributors with limited success but from what I can tell he seems to know his stuff.
