Another SNES question for you all (I'm really on a SNES kick these days): I love Knights of the Round coin-op and I was thinking of getting the SNES version but having watched it on YouTube I have to say, as sacreligious as this sounds, I don't like the music they added. I assume there's an option to turn that off? I know, I know, it's a great example of the quality of music you can have on SNES, etc. etc. etc. but I find it drowns out the sound effects.
Does anyone have the SNES one and can confirm there is an option to turn off the music?

I have it - unfortunately, I don't think the music can be disabled. Also, you only get so many continues which can make it difficult to make it through the whole game. I've gotten close when I used to play it a lot, but I've never made it to the end on SNES.

Love that game, though. One of my favorite CPS-1 games for sure. I think I'll play some tonight. The real thing of course, not SNES :)

Yes, great game. If you need a Knights of the Round fix, just hook up a joystick to your PC and play it on MAME.

The only arcade game ported to the SNES I think is on par or possibly better than the original arcade version is Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. It's just a whole different game.

I do have Knights of the Round on my MAME cab but that machine takes a little while to fire up so I reckoned the SNES would be a quick and easy way to play the game. But that music is definitely a problem for me. Sure wish you could turn it off or turn it down.

That's a strange thing to say, the music is as good on KoTR as any other Capcom SNES game of that time, I have never turned the music off on any game I play, it's not meant to be played that way. I mean you only saw the game playing on a YOUTUBE video, mabey it wasn't even the real music. Get the real cart and play it before passing judgement, and save your wishes for something important.

Why does it take a while to fire up? If you're running MAME, it should only take about 5 secs to load and get a game going, especially for a CPS1 game which is not data heavy.

SNES may be quicker to turn on and play, but you don't even own the cart yet and if you have easy access to playing the "original" in MAME, why not go that route?

All valid points.

The reason my MAME machine takes a while to turn on is I have an X-Arcade control panel which is awesome but for whatever reason, it doesn't work when I first turn on my machine, I need to reboot at least once or maybe twice before it recognizes X-Arcade keystrokes. (I got one of the first generation that uses PS2 keyboard input). So turning on the MAME cab, waiting for Windows to boot, rebooting it finally and possibly rebooting it yet again before I can play is not the biggest inconvenience in the world, but for those quick and dirty gaming needs, the SNES is better.

With regards to the music on Knights of the Round, true it was only a YouTube video (though I watched several different ones from several different posting users and they all had the music) but I like how the coin-op version sound effects sound and the SNES music always seems to be drowning out those sound effects. It is good music, no doubt, but I prefer how the coin-op one sounded. It just would have been nice if the music was selectable or possible to disable, that's all.

OIC. I'm not familiar with X-Arcade controller. I can see how that can be annoying, but worth it if you're really itching to play.

I just use a MAME plug-n-play solution in my SFII cab or my SFIVTE Arcade Fightstick (X360 version, easy plug-n-play to Win 7) if I just want to play on my laptop or TV.

Either way, I hope you find your convenient way of playing the game. :)

Good call on the Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, love it but like the others a REAL PITA. I have both the SNES and Super Fami versions boxed. LOVE IT.

That's great and all... except Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts was never an arcade game.

We never said it was. We said it was a port of the original Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

As with many classic console ports, it's not always going to be true to the original. In this case, many argue SGnG is better.

We're just not on the same page and talking technicalties based on the use of the word "super" on the title of a game.

What I'm saying is that they were pretty much ports of the original arcade versions. SRT and SGnG were not entirely brand new concepts. They were built off the concepts of the original games and are similar in both game design and gameplay.

Super Mario Bros. was an entirely different game in both design and gameplay and not even part of this discussion. If they had made it a variation of the original Mario Bros. arcade game, then it would be. But we all know it isn't.

But hey, maybe it's just a matter of opinion of what is truly a port or not. Just explaining my reasoning of why I called it a port. :)

Ghouls 'n Ghosts was indeed a port of the Arcade version to the Sega Genesis (and Super Grafx). Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts was not a port, but a brand new game in the series. I think you're looking at the word 'port' differently then I do.

Yeah, I think so too. It's all good.

GnG was fun on Genesis. I still think SGnG is better. Maybe because it was a newer version in the series like you said. Like Ultimate GnG for PSP which was terrible.

Hi again all, can I ask people's opinions of King of Dragons on SNES? It looks very much like Knight of the Round, although it also suffers from the music being too loud (in my opinion).

I haven't played King of Dragons, how does it differ from Knights? And, if anyone has the cartridge, does King at least allow you to turn off the music in the game?

I'm sure Nintendo were very pleased at the musical fidelity of this console when it came out and therefore emphasized the music in the games but wow did they ever drown out the sound effects when they did it.

I don't have this one, but now I want it. SNES version does not allow you to disable or turn down the music in the options...all you can do is enable/disable stereo :p

If you have a PS2 or Xbox, the arcade version was included in Capcom Classics Collection 2.

Handy at the time if you had a mono TV set with only one audio input...

King of Dragons is awesome, many good memories playing that coop with friends at the arcade.
