This is just a friendly messageboard high score competition.

The game in question is Asteroids Deluxe

You must achieve your score during the competition, which runs from November 12th and ends sunday evening November 18th at roughly midnight central time.

No using your old score from last year. Current and former Twin Galaxies world record holders on Asteroids Deluxe are not eligible to win this contest, although they are encouraged to submit a score for exhibition purposes.

Please attempt to photograph your score in some manner if you can.

Mame, real pcbs and multiboards are all appropriate platforms to play the game on. Any version is fine on real hardware provided it doesn't have any cheats installed.

No mame cheats, games achieved using emulator save states or modified roms please.

Dip Switch Settings
3 Lives
Extra Life: NONE (No marathon games in this contest).

Please post your scores in this thread. Go ahead and post your score even if it isn't competitive with the others (I know mine won't be).

Winner of the competition may select the game for the next competition. Please post your selection for the next game when you post your score, otherwise I will choose the next title myself. Please try to stick to common titles or titles available on the 60 in 1 or 19 in 1 boards in order to maximize the number of people who can participate. If you pick something obscure that gets no buzz then I reserve the right to replace the selection. If the winner of the contest has already won the last two contest then the next contest will instead use the title selected by the first runner up.

You are also certainly encouraged to use this thread to post your Asteroids Deluxe tips, tricks, stories and technical information.

Wasn't there different versions of the roms where was set was harder? Since I'm going to be playing in MAME as I have no AD machine, I want to make sure I'm playing the same as everyone else.

BTW, I LOVE these little contests!

I have been playing the default version in mame. I am trying not to get too picky about things like rom revisions as that can be unfair to the people with the real machines and this is all just for fun anyway.

I was excited to see this at work today because I actually own an AD. I came home and opened her up to adjust the dip switches. It would not turn on. Turns out my son both pulled the plug and turned it off at the switch when he was playing this weekend. Took me longer than I care to admit to figure that one out.

Damn. I've stripped out my control panel to install TOG repro overlay. Not going to finish in time. Maybe next go 'round

I know how you feel, I am running the contest and I have a deal made to trade for an Asteroids Deluxe, but I don't have it yet, so I am stuck playing it in mame with a joystick.

So, for the record... that's SW#1:
7, 8: OFF OFF
3, 4: ON ON or OFF ON?

I really hate getting behind this machine and would like to just do it twice if possible (once for the contest settings, and once to switch them back to normal).

This is all I could finagle since last night, set up as per TG rules:

I brought my cabaret to the 2011 Seattle show and someone put up 59k, and signed it as RAY. That was with the first revision ROM's! Since then I've swapped in the later revision and set the dip for 'easy', but I still can't break out of the mid 20k's.

I decided not to reset the high scores so I have something to shoot for.

Played a few games. Having to use a joystick plus buttons as the button layout on my mame cabinet is not friendly to playing Asteroids with all buttons.

Been playing on this game today, managed to get 28,770. Challenging game indeed! and frustrating. Trying to get better at using the shield at the right time to stay alive. I am playing it on Mame though, remapping the keyboard to a similar layout to Asteroids. It works decent.

Put on my Rush mix tape tonight and played a little. Can't seem to break 24k with these settings. Having a ball trying though.

Damn this game! Had 35,000 on my first ship then choked with the last 2 and only ended up with 40,120. Ghosts 'n Goblins is considered one of the tougher games around, a game that I am very good at and just have a knack for playing. But personally, I would rate this Asteroids Deluxe, even though a different beast, a more challenging game for me, but fun as hell.

Sorry for the delay everyone.

Official winner of the contest is dr.detroit20 with 40120 points.

YodainMN did post a slightly higher score but he used the twin galaxies dip settings which give extra ships so we will call him the runner up.

The winner did not specify a game for the next contest so I will pick.

I played 3 ships and the hard setting.... I have the actual earlier revision romset in mine for clarification.. Mr. McCann, please post a pic of the third highest score in your machine please?
