I know that the KLOV game search is garbage, but I'm attempting to find a list of "button-only" games and a list of "spinner" games.

Has anyone figured out how to do this?

Thanks.

I don't know if you can do that with the KLOV search, but you may be able to find what you want with a search of MAME games. Go to http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/ and choose "deluxe search" at the top. For control select "dial" and it will bring up every spinner game in MAME (which would also be most, if not all, spinner games ever made). You can narrow the results by, for example, selecting "dial" for control and "0" for buttons, and it will bring up the short list of games that only used a spinner and no buttons ... and so on.

In order to search, you have to know what you are searching for - based on how the database is set up.

For example, if you want a list of spinner games, then you first find a known spinner game like Arkanoid. Then you look at how the spinner is listed, and you find "Rotary: Optical". Then you go to the Advanced Search (click the Search link at the top) and go to the Control Panel Layout dropdown menu and choose "Rotary: Optical". Do a Search and you get a list of all games with that feature.

Now, I don't know if you can find a list of games that ONLY have buttons (and I assume a joystick), as it's not easy excluding controls considering how many different types there are....

Yeah, that's why the search function sucks. :D

As for spinners try that and see if you can get Tempest and Arkanoid in the same search results.

Go back to the search and change it to "Rotary: Analog" and you'll get a lot more results - like Pong and Warlords...

I just figured out the problem.

There is an advanced search page that you wouldn't know existed until you make the initial search because there is no link there for it.

It's right there on the front page:

Use the advanced search feature. You can do EXACTLY what you're looking for.

EDIT: Durr... never mind... already addressed.

Then perhaps they should take that "Search Machines" option down. It just cause confusion.

It would be better to rename the "search" link to something like "Advanced Search". Most search functions include a quick generalized search and a more advanced search option. The generalized search field on the main page should stay, because that's all most people need (most people are just searching for a game name).
