KLOV - Code of Ethics Policy

I'm a restoration nut and will give stuff away generally before I part or pitch... however how exactly to you all intend on enforcing these ethics?

I would say it's nothing more than debate to keep us busy. :)

No real intent of setting or enforcing any ethics.

Don't forget that your name was never mentioned at all and there are certainly other people out here that voice their opinion in your favor but you instantly took it to heart and assumed it was you i was talking about.

If you want to be a douche and play that game go ahead. Or, you could just man up and say the name but it's obvious you were referring to me. I really don't even know why I respond to a troll like you.

So, I guess the beer offer at CAX is out?

Ok... so its more or less an exercise... is the intent a "thou shalt" or would it be little flexible ... like a flow chart, if you will... of questions that you could ask your self to determine an acceptable course of action... does it work?, is it rare?, is it vector? is the machine water damaged? yada yada yada...

Because, I mean if you just state "Thou shal not part any classic game (197x-198x)" then there is your ethics rule... kind of covers it all.

i dont sell parts and im ok with it.

without parts to fix my machines, i would have several dead ones. used parts saves me a ton of money and to be honest the only way you can get half of these parts is to find them used.

Im sorry some people feel others are "murdering classics" but without parts to fix our machines, we would all be collecting big paperweights.

+7000!!

I think people fail to realize that one single parted out game might actually save 4 or 5 games. Collateral damage, baby.

Or maybe some questions that have a weight value for each response so that if all responses total >= <some value> the game must not be parted.

Sounds like an Internet forum with a homeowners' association to me! Blech!

Yeah. I ain't signing/agreeing to shit.
I already have an HOA to deal with. :D

Really, I have no problem with the HOA because I know how to get along. The HOA is there to keep people inline that don't "get it". I don't see a need for that regarding old arcade games.

It is now stated that the arcade preservation movement is in full effect.

No Games in your possesion may be parted, disassembled, or looked at funny without express permission from at least 3 board members.

Any members not adhering to this bylaw, will be banned.

Board Members TBA at a later time.

"I'm still waiting to see the KLOV code of ethics statement as it pertains to arcade preservation. Could someone please show me where it states that all games in your posession must be preserved and passing on/selling of parts to preserve another is strictly prohibited?

Until it's written that you must conform to this policy to be a member, will the whiners please lay off?"

LOL I know most of this is in jest but i'm the type that doesn't handcuff myself unnecessarily. The government does plenty of that for us, lol.

I believe we are vastly reaching a point that PCB's are starting to dwindle because we've become such a "throw away" society. When hardware prices dropped it became more cost effective to throw your board set in the garbage and buy one off eBay because the PCB repair guys would be charging an outlandish amount of money and now tack on shipping both ways. Ouch. Hell yes working board off eBay and throw the old one away because it's burning up too much space on my (insert work area here).

A little sarcasm there - but the base is solid. I'm not capable of performing in depth board repairs and when I need something I call dick Millikan and pay to do a board swap. I get a working board and I know my old one will "eventually" get repaired and stay out of the landfill.

And WTF is it with everyone being so freaking sensitive these days?
Bunch of people manstrating due to that time of the month?

I've never parted out a dedicated game... entirely.

The closest I came was when I converted a working DK Jr to run an Arcadeshop Multigame. Yes... that is bad... but it's not a "part out" exactly. The only part I sold was the PCB. Would I do it again? Probably not... but it was one of my first.

I have sold parts off already parted cabs, etc... though.

Can I be a bored member? I have the qualifications!

I've never sold anything relating to arcade collecting. Not a single part. I'd like to say I'm a true preservationist, but I'm really just lazy, and a bit of a hoarder.

I took the time off work to go to the show but between my dog getting sick and a few other things i just can't make it this year. Hopefully next year I will be there.

Back on topic. There are plenty of games that are fair candidates for parting out without having to part out a nice ones. I understand that not every game can be saved and not every game should be saved. What kills me is when people part out the good ones for really stupid reasons like :
1. I tried to sell it ( for about 3 days) and it did not sell.
2. It's missing one part so they give up on it.
3. It's in nice shape but does not work so they part it out.
4. They need a spare working 6100 monitor for their other game ( still can't believe that one)
5. They need space " right away". For what ? Another game ? Too fucking bad. If you are parting out a good game to make room for anther one then you dont deserve to own another game. No one really ever needs space that bad and that fast.

This is ( or at least was ) supposed to be the forums for VAPS. A place dedicated to preserving arcade games. If you want to part out a game for some dumb reason and list it on here, then you deserve to get flamed. As I always have said in the past, it's funny how I am the one that gets flamed for calling someone out on parting a nice game, and the guy parting out the game is ok. And for the last time, you don't need to part out fixable games to save others. There are plenty of parts if you have some patience.

i just can't make it this year.

Dave,

Chris is 5 foot nothin', and weighs about a buck fifteen. Nothing to be scared of. He parts out his machines cause he's too small to move the fuckers around his game room without a small army of help!

This idea uses the term ethics very loosely.
