Anyone played this? Is it any good? How is the replay value?

There is one for sale reasonably close, and I may be able to get it for a deal. Figured I'd see if anyone had anything good/bad to say about the game.

action puzzle game along the lines of Tetris and Dr. Mario. if you like those chances are good you'll enjoy Klax.

it came in both kit and dedicated upright & cabaret forms. the dedicated cabs are usually more valuable.

that being said, the game isn't all that sought after (though the cabaret does have it's champions) and isn't worth a whole lot.

This looks like the dedicated upright, and in pretty decent condition. I offered the guy $100 for it, I'll see if he bites. :D

I love the game, but the stripped original cab I had was used as a litter box too long to be saved.

Klax is a lot of fun. I got hooked with it on MAME a long time ago.

I'm pretty sure it's a JAMMA board, so you can plug other stuff in there too.

For a real tough one, try to make that giant X with your tiles!

Klax is a lot of fun. It is JAMMA, but only has 4-way joys + one action button, so you'd have to wire up P1/P2 start to use another board.

Sadly, they are worth more as parts. The Atari logo joys are worth more than most of the games.

I was introduced to KLAX on Atari LYNX then got to know the arcade. If you get a good deal on a working cabinet take it. Mint working $250 and working $100.

Great game but you can get it for free or for cheap on handhelds, mobiles, etc. It plays the same on most platforms. I still have my working Lynx with cart. It's my preferred way to play.

Klax is a fun game (I have proto 2). The deidcated cab is great cab. Flat front drawer access and easy rotate monitor. Its jamma.

Here is a pic of the dedicated cab. If it was under $300, I would grab it.

it looks like a conversion to me.
that is the same cab as what the dedicated primal rage came in.
i have two dedicated rages and it is the same cab.

if it is the dedicated cab, then they could/should have picked a better looking/unique cab for it. just saying.

on the subject at hand. i kinda like the game. haven't played it enough to love it or hate it.

no, primal rage is similar, but different in many ways. Primal cab is very close to proto tmek upright.

primal has a 25" monitor that can't be rotated (25" version of family cab like klax can be rotated.) Klax is 19".

control panel on primal has a higher back and uses a key to lock it from the front. The board is mounted on a wood sheet that sildes out. Family cab, the whole drawer slides out. Its latched into place. Some cabs latch the control panel down. others (rampart, pitfighter, guardians of the hood) use security screws to hold the control panel down.

Primal has a subwooferand offset coin door to make room for sub. Klax has a center mounted coin door. Klax is same as badlands, EPROM, skull and crosssbows and tournament cyberball (the last 3 have oversized marquees that fit into the normal marquee opening).

ok sounds good.

that's cool that you have the proto versions of the games.

ill have to keep all that in mind when i come across those types of cabs.

maybe i will find one for my KLAX board.

thanks for the lesson in that family of cabs.
you learn something new everyday on the forums.:):)

Well, just a quick update. I threw the guy an offer of $100...

And he took it.. lol. I go to pick it up this weekend! :D The cab on this one looks slightly different, looks like blue paint or vynal on the kickplate.

Tell me what you think, is it original or a conversion? (edit: It must be a conversion, it does look different than the earlier post of the dedicated cab. Although, it does look like one of the cabs on the IAM database..)

thats a converted wizard of wor cabinet. Looks decent. atari made 550 dedicated, 500 cabaret and 4800 kits. Kits came with full art and someone did a decent job applying it to your cab.

I am be the odd one, but I have never liked it.
Didn't like it in the 80s and still don't.

Just had to comment on this. Did you have a time machine in the 80's to get to the 90's?

Klax's catchphrase, "It is the nineties and it is time for Klax"

;)

Released in 1989, but most didn't play it until 90's.

Congrats! That thing has been taunting me on CL forever...seriously must have been up for almost a year. I many times thought about offering him $100, but didn't think they would bite and really didn't want to go any more. Plus basement space is at a premium and I don't want to start adding vids that aren't on my short "grail" list. :)

Glad to see it finally going to a good home so it stops tempting me! LOL! :)
